ISO 6780:2003

Overview

ISO 6780:2003 specifies the principal dimensions and tolerances for flat pallets used in intercontinental materials handling. It applies to new single‑deck and double‑deck, reversible and non‑reversible pallets of any material and all entry types, defining the sizes, clearances and construction features required for safe and efficient handling by pallet trucks, fork‑lift trucks and other equipment. The standard promotes interoperability and distribution efficiency by encouraging a limited set of internationally recognized pallet sizes.

• Approved pallet sizes (plan dimensions):
  • Rectangular: 1200 × 800 mm, 1200 × 1000 mm, 1219 × 1016 mm
  • Square: 1067 × 1067 mm, 1100 × 1100 mm, 1140 × 1140 mm
• Manufacturing tolerances on plan dimensions: +3 / −6 mm.
• Vertical clearances (H) under the top deck:
  • Pallet trucks: High 100 mm; Standard 95 mm; Low 89 mm (maximum H to bottom surface 156 mm)
  • Fork‑lift trucks: minimum 50 mm (some countries require 55 mm)
  • Automatic handling systems: recommended 100 mm
• Horizontal clearances for end/side entries and openings: defined via tables and diagrams (normative Annex B) to ensure fork arm compatibility.
• Bottom deck chamfers: chamfer face 40° ± 5°, vertical face height ≤ 16 mm, max distance to deck separators 65 mm.
