ISO 699:2015 specifies a method for the determination of the alkali-insoluble fraction of pulps using sodium hydroxide solution of fixed concentration. The sodium hydroxide concentrations most frequently used are 18, 10, and 5 % (m/m). The method is applicable to all kinds of pulp.

ISO 699:2015 specifies a laboratory method for determining the alkali-insoluble fraction (alkali resistance) of pulps using fixed-concentration sodium hydroxide solutions. The standard is applicable to all kinds of pulp and defines how to prepare samples, treat them with NaOH (commonly 18%, 10% or 5% (m/m)), filter, acidify, wash, dry and weigh the insoluble residue to calculate the R‑value (alkali resistance) expressed as a percentage by mass.
