Specifies the properties of the various lead units used in the construction of shielded enclosures: basic units (bricks, posts) and functional units (aperture bricks, windows, sphere units, plugs and reducing units). Only one and two chevron bricks are standardized. The units are classified into 3 categories: standardized units; units which are either used very infrequently or for very specialized purposes, or are used very frequently in one country and it is felt that this use will become more widespread; units which are acceptable for a transition period.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7212:1986 - Enclosures for protection against ionizing radiation - Lead shielding units for 50 mm and 100 mm thick walls - specifies standardized lead units used to build shielded enclosures. The standard covers basic units (bricks, posts) and functional units (aperture bricks, windows, sphere units, plugs, reducing units) for 50 mm and 100 mm lead walls. It defines material properties, dimensional modules, chevron profiles, assembly directions and a designation system for interchangeable lead shielding components.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and classification
- Units are classified into Category 1 (standardized), Category 2 (specialized or regionally common) and Category 3 (transitional/withdrawn).
- 50 mm and 100 mm lead walls are treated separately to simplify references.
- Material properties
- Minimum lead density and antimony-alloying requirements are specified, plus a minimum Brinell hardness to ensure mechanical performance after casting.
- Unit types
- Basic units: plain bricks, corner bricks, end bricks, special square/X bricks and posts (max 3 m height).
- Functional units: standardized aperture bricks (interchangeable circular/rectangular mounts), windows, sphere units, plugs and reducing units.
- Geometric standards
- A modular unit of 100 mm × 100 mm is used throughout for designation and sizing.
- Only one- and two-chevron brick profiles are standardized; chevron dimensions and tolerances are defined to ensure tight, radiation-resistant joints.
- Assembly and designation
- Two assembly directions are defined; special bricks enable reversal of assembly direction.
- A reference-number scheme encodes thickness, profile, assembly direction and unit-specific number (e.g., the format illustrated in the standard).
Applications
- Construction of radiation shielded enclosures for:
- Nuclear facilities and research labs
- Medical radiotherapy and diagnostic imaging rooms
- Industrial radiography and non‑destructive testing shielded booths
- Temporary shielding and modular barrier systems
- Use cases include design and fabrication of lead-lined walls, exchangeable window/aperture mounts, and modular plug/sphere penetrations for pipelines, manipulator ports or viewing windows.
Who uses this standard
- Radiation protection engineers and health physicists
- Facility designers, architects and construction teams for radiological environments
- Manufacturers of lead bricks, posts and window frames
- Regulatory bodies and quality assurance teams specifying shielding performance and interchangeability
Related standards and notes
- Prepared by ISO/TC 85 (Nuclear energy); references to other ISO radiation-protection standards imply their latest editions. ISO 7212 promotes interchangeability, consistent material quality, and predictable assembly practices for lead shielding units.
