Overview
ISO 7410:1983 - "Fertilizers and soil conditioners - Final samples - Practical arrangements" defines practical requirements for handling, sealing, labelling, disposal and storage of final samples of solid fertilizers and soil conditioners. Developed by ISO/TC 134, the standard complements sampling and reporting standards (see ISO 5306) and is intended to preserve sample integrity for quality control, regulatory checks and dispute resolution.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope: Applies to final (laboratory) samples of solid fertilizers and soil conditioners and establishes practical arrangements for their preservation and identification.
- Containers: Must be clean, dry and impervious to moisture. Recommended materials are glass, plastics or other inert materials with adequate resistance. Containers require airtight closures.
- Sealing: Each container must be secured and sealed so it can be opened only by breaking the seal. If not sealed directly, the container must be placed in a sealed, robust outer package. The label should be incorporated into the seal to prevent tampering.
- Labelling: Every final sample label must be securely attached and include at least:
- Final sample number or distinguishing mark
- Name of material and nominal composition
- Manufacturer’s reference and batch number (if available)
- Date and place of sampling
- Signature and name of the sampler
- Signature and name of the person (or representative) on whose premises sampling was performed
If label information is insufficient, a sampling report as specified in ISO 5306 should accompany the sample.
- Disposal and transfer: When submitting samples to third parties, the sampler may deliver by hand or use appropriate transport methods, ensuring containers are protected against damage and storage precautions are observed.
- Storage: Final samples must be stored under conditions that prevent deterioration.
- Regulatory note: Users should also consider any legal requirements applicable in the jurisdictions concerned.
Applications and users
ISO 7410 is practical for:
- Quality control laboratories and manufacturers of fertilizers and soil conditioners
- Regulatory agencies, inspection bodies and customs authorities
- Third‑party testing laboratories and dispute resolution panels
- Transporters and storage facilities handling retained samples
It helps ensure sample integrity for chemical analysis, compliance verification and legal evidence.
