Overview
ISO 7507-1:2003 - "Petroleum and liquid petroleum products - Calibration of vertical cylindrical tanks - Part 1: Strapping method" defines the strapping method for calibrating substantially vertical cylindrical storage tanks. The standard describes how to measure tank circumferences with a calibrated strapping tape, apply necessary corrections, and compute the tank capacity table (volumes vs. liquid level). It is suitable as a working, reference, or referee method and applies to tanks with up to 3% tilt when tilt corrections are made. The method is not intended for abnormally deformed (dented or non‑circular) tanks.
Key Topics
- Scope & method definition: Use of external circumference measurements to derive volumes, and roles (working/reference/referee).
- Equipment requirements: Specifications for strapping tapes, tensioning handles, tape positioners and step‑overs (see normative annex for equipment).
- Circumference measurements: Procedures for systematic strappings, handling obstructions (step‑overs), and recording measurements.
- Corrections and calculations: Adjustments for shell thickness, tilt, step‑over corrections, and temperature/expansion effects to compute accurate open and net capacities.
- Deadwood & bottoms: Treatment of fittings and internal structures that affect effective capacity (positive/negative deadwood); bottom calibration considerations.
- Special cases: Guidance for floating‑roof tanks and for tilted tanks (≤3% deviation with correction).
- Quality & documentation: Recalibration criteria, computation and construction of final capacity tables, calibration uncertainties, and a model certificate of calibration.
- Supporting annexes: Monitoring recommendations, calibration data sheets, uncertainty analysis, and temperature correction procedures.
Applications
ISO 7507-1 is used where reliable tank volume data is essential:
- Custody transfer and commercial inventory control in oil terminals, refineries and bulk storage facilities
- Reference circumference generation for optical and electro‑optical calibration methods (other parts of ISO 7507)
- Acceptance testing, periodic verification and dispute resolution (referee calibrations)
- Routine tank calibration programs, metrology labs and third‑party calibration providers
Typical users include tank calibration technicians, metrologists, terminal operators, oil & gas measurement engineers, regulatory inspectors and auditors.
