Specifies a procedure for approximating the volume of typical materials contained in the bucket of front end loaders and excavators with front loading buckets. The volume ratings are based on the inside dimensions of the bucket and representative volumes on top of the bucket. The rating method is intended to provide a consistent means of comparing bucket capacities. It is not intended to define actual capacities that might be observed in any specific application.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7546:1983 specifies a standardized procedure for approximating the volumetric ratings of loader and front‑loading excavator buckets. The method produces a consistent, repeatable bucket capacity (rated ISO bucket capacity) based on the bucket’s interior dimensions and a representative volume of material that sits above the bucket. ISO 7546:1983 is intended for comparison and specification purposes - it does not claim to predict actual field fill or operational capacity in every application.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Rating principle: Rated bucket volume (VR) = struck volume (VS) + top volume (VT).
- Struck volume is the material beneath the strike plane.
- Top volume models material on top of the strike plane using a representative slope (standard uses a 2:1 slope for the top heap).
- Strike plane definition: Horizontal plane defined differently by bucket shape (e.g., basic bucket, extended cutting edge, extended back sheet, irregular cutting edge, combinations).
- Geometric approach: Complex material shapes inside a bucket are divided into simple geometric solids for calculation.
- Restrictions and exclusions:
- Local discontinuities (teeth, adapters, gussets) are ignored.
- Grated/slotted back sheets (used as protection) are excluded from capacity calculations; solid extended back sheets are included only if integral to the bucket.
- The method applies only to buckets with an X/Y side‑sheet ratio greater than 12.
- Expression and rounding:
- Results are expressed in cubic metres and published as the rated ISO bucket capacity.
- The standard defines rating intervals and a rule that if the calculated capacity falls more than 2% below an interval, the next lower interval is used.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 7546:1983 is useful for:
- Bucket and equipment manufacturers - to publish consistent, comparable bucket capacities.
- Equipment specifiers and procurement teams - for objective capacity comparisons during selection and tendering.
- Fleet managers and rental companies - to match bucket sizes to job requirements and estimate productivity ranges.
- Engineers and designers - for preliminary sizing of loaders and excavators and for compatibility checks.
- Standards bodies and technical writers - to harmonize terminology and capacity reporting.
Note: Use ISO 7546:1983 for standardized comparison and specification. For project‑specific load, fill factor and material properties must be evaluated on site.
