This document specifies dimensional and other requirements for the 11 most commonly used carbide cutters which are predominantly used in the dental laboratory. NOTE These cutters are also used in podiatry.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 7787-2:2020 defines dimensional and performance requirements for carbide laboratory cutters used predominantly in dental laboratories (and also in podiatry). The fifth edition of this ISO dentistry standard specifies the 11 most commonly used tungsten‑carbide cutter shapes, their nominal sizes, shank type and length, run‑out limits, sampling and pass/fail criteria, and rules for designation, marking and labelling to ensure interchangeability and quality.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Material: Working part made of tungsten carbide; shank made of stainless steel or other suitable material.
- Shapes and sizes: Eleven standard shapes (e.g., ball, inverted truncated conical, cylindrical, domed, rounded cone, bud slender, paraboloidal, cone, egg, pear) with defined nominal diameters and working‑part lengths as shown in the standard’s figures and tables.
- Shank: Type 2 shank per ISO 1797; combined shank + neck length = 38 ± 2 mm.
- Run‑out: Total indicated run‑out limit of ≤ 0.08 mm; measurement methods per ISO 8325.
- Cutter blades: Manufacturer selects blade geometry; designation (fine/coarse etc.) and optional colour coding are standardized for labelling and marking.
- Sampling & acceptance: Type testing uses 10 randomly selected instruments from a validation batch. Acceptance rules: if 10 pass → comply; if 8 or fewer pass → fail; if 9 pass → test 10 more (all additional 10 must pass).
- Designation & marking: Use designation code numbers per ISO 2157; packaging and instrument marking requirements include manufacturer ID, material of working part and shank type, and applicable symbols (ISO 15223‑1).
Applications and Users
- Dental laboratories and dental technicians who need standardized carbide rotary cutters for trimming, shaping and finishing dental prostheses and restorations.
- Manufacturers of dental rotary instruments for product design, quality control and compliance with international standards.
- Regulatory bodies, procurement teams and quality assurance personnel verifying interchangeability, safety and dimensional conformity.
- Podiatry labs that use the same carbide cutters for foot care applications.
Benefits include enhanced interchangeability, reliable performance, clearer labelling and simplified procurement of carbide laboratory cutters.
