Specifies the electrical characteristics with which d.c. flasher units are required to comply when submitted for type-testing. Applies to flashers intended for use with 6 V or 12 V systems. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (1984).
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8052:1990 - Mopeds - Direct current flasher units specifies the electrical characteristics and type‑test requirements for d.c. flasher units intended for mopeds with 6 V or 12 V electrical systems. This second edition (1990) cancels and replaces the 1984 edition and forms part of a family of vehicle lighting standards. The standard defines identification, working voltages for test conditions, required markings and the test procedures that confirm a flasher’s safe and reliable operation as a direction indicator and/or hazard warning device.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and identification: Flasher units must be marked with manufacturer name, rated voltage, terminal identification and lamp wattages. Applies to mopeds as defined in ISO 3833.
- Working voltages and test voltages: Tests use nominal working voltages corresponding to 6 V and 12 V systems (test references use voltages such as 6.5 V, 7 V, 13 V and 14 V).
- Flash-rate and duty cycle: When functioning as direction indicators, flash-rate requirements are enforced (typical range 60–120 cycles/min) and the current “on”-time must fall between 30% and 75% of each cycle.
- Starting performance: First “on”-time must begin within 1 s of switching on; first “off”-time within 1.5 s; initial “on”-time must be at least 0.2 s.
- Voltage drop limits: With prescribed supply voltages, the minimum voltage drop between input and output terminals must not exceed 0.4 V for direction indicator operation and 0.5 V for hazard warning operation.
- Overload and electrical robustness: The flasher must survive a maximum current condition (test config requires withstanding 35 A for a limited interval during overload testing).
- Environmental and mechanical tests: Includes vibration (20–200 Hz, high acceleration amplitudes), impact tests, resistance to heat/cold/humidity (+40 °C at 90–95% RH, +80 °C, −40 °C) and endurance cycles (including long continuous operation and timed on/off cycles).
- Type‑test sampling: Typical sample size and individual test sequencing are specified (e.g., 20 samples for full sequence).
Applications and who uses it
- Moped and small vehicle manufacturers selecting or designing d.c. flasher units.
- Component suppliers and flasher‑unit designers validating product performance and compliance.
- Test laboratories performing type‑approval and conformity assessments.
- Regulatory and certification bodies adopting consistent electrical and safety criteria for vehicle lighting.
- Quality assurance and safety engineers ensuring reliability under vibration, temperature and electrical stress.
