Provides a general introduction to the concepts and mechanisms specified in the parts 2 to 4 of ISO 8571. The definitions are used in the following parts of ISO 8571. References: ISO 7498, 8326, ISO/TR 8509, ISO 8571, 8649, 8822, 8824, 8825, 9804 , 9834-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 8571-1:1988 - Information processing systems - Open Systems Interconnection - File Transfer, Access and Management - Part 1: General introduction provides the conceptual foundation and definitions for the FTAM family of standards. Part 1 does not specify interfaces or protocol syntax itself; instead it introduces the virtual filestore model, core concepts and service/regime terminology that Parts 2–4 (and the later Part 5 proforma) use to define the virtual filestore, file service and file protocol. ISO 8571-1 cross-references the OSI Reference Model and related standards (for example ISO 7498, 8822, 8824, 8825) so implementers can align FTAM with other OSI services.
Key topics and technical scope
ISO 8571-1 defines the vocabulary, architectural context and high-level mechanisms used across the FTAM standard series. Major technical topics include:
- Virtual filestore model - abstract representation of files, filestores and attributes used to describe file objects independently of local file system implementations.
- File structures and presentation - categories of file structure, access and presentation considerations.
- Filestore schema and constraint sets - schemas and rules that constrain file content, access and allowed actions.
- Document types and naming - definitions used for registering and handling different file/document types.
- File service regimes and phases - high-level service phases (initialization, filestore management, file selection, open, data access, close, deselection, termination) and control regimes such as RAM/FOAM referenced in later parts.
- File protocol mechanisms (overview) - protocol state machine concepts, grouping of protocol data units (PDUs), transparency, checkpointing, diagnostics, docket handling and error recovery strategies (detailed protocol specs appear in Part 4).
This part also lists informative annexes (examples of FTAM use, summary of information objects) and clarifies the scope of definitions used in Parts 2–4.
Practical applications and users
ISO 8571-1 is essential background for:
- Protocol designers and implementers building FTAM-compliant file transfer/access/management systems.
- Fileserver and storage vendors implementing interoperable remote file access across OSI-based networks.
- Systems integrators and network architects who must map local filesystem models to a standardized virtual filestore for cross-platform interoperability.
- Standards engineers and compliance testers preparing conformance statements and integration test plans.
Keywords: ISO 8571-1, FTAM, Open Systems Interconnection, virtual filestore, file service, file protocol, file transfer access management.
