ISO 9017:2017 specifies the sizes of test specimen and the procedures for carrying out fracture tests in order to obtain information about types, sizes and distribution of internal imperfections such as porosities, cracks, lack of fusion, lack of penetration and solid inclusions on the fracture surface. ISO 9017:2017 applies to metallic materials in all forms of product with joints made by any fusion welding process with a thickness greater or equal to 2 mm.

ISO 9017:2017 - "Destructive tests on welds in metallic materials - Fracture test" defines how to prepare and carry out fracture (destructive) tests on welded joints to reveal internal imperfections. The standard specifies test‑piece and specimen dimensions, notching and preparation methods, and fracture techniques (bending, tension, impact) for metallic products with fusion‑welded joints of thickness ≥ 2 mm. Its purpose is to obtain information about types, sizes and distribution of internal defects such as porosities, cracks, lack of fusion, lack of penetration and solid inclusions on the fracture surface.

- Test methods: Fracture may be induced by dynamic impact (hammer), pressing (vice/press/bending machine) or tension. Test temperature is normally ambient (23 ± 5 °C) unless otherwise specified. Special procedures for thin vs. thick materials are described (e.g., alternate bending for thin materials; hammer impact acceptable for thick).
