A sample is oxidized by combustion in a bomb containing oxygen under pressure. The sulphur is gravimetrically determined in the bomb washings in the form of barium sulfate. The method is applicable to pitches of both coal ta and petroleum origin, provided that they contain at least 0,1 % (m/m) sulfur.
Abstract
Overview
ISO 9055:1988 specifies a laboratory method for determining sulfur in pitch for electrodes (carbonaceous materials used in aluminium production) using the bomb combustion (general bomb) method. A weighed sample is oxidized by combustion in an oxygen‑pressurized bomb; the sulphur oxidizes to sulfate, which is recovered from the bomb washings and gravimetrically determined as barium sulfate (BaSO4). The method is applicable to coal‑tar and petroleum‑derived pitches containing at least 0.1% (m/m) sulfur.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and applicability: Pitches for electrodes used in aluminium production with ≥0.1% S.
- Principle: Combustion in an oxygen bomb; precipitation of sulfate as BaSO4; gravimetric weighing and conversion to %S using a conversion factor (0.1373).
- Sampling and sample preparation: Follow ISO 6257 for sampling. Grind hard samples to
