Overview
ISO 9809-1:2019 - “Gas cylinders - Design, construction and testing of refillable seamless steel gas cylinders and tubes - Part 1” specifies minimum requirements for quenched and tempered seamless steel cylinders and tubes with a maximum actual tensile strength (Rma) of less than 1 100 MPa and water capacities up to and including 450 L. This third-edition (2019) international standard covers material selection, design, manufacturing, inspection and testing at the time of manufacture for cylinders used for compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases.
Key topics and requirements
- Materials and metallurgy: minimum material controls, chemical composition checks, typical steel types and heat-treatment guidance for quenched and tempered steels.
- Design rules: requirements for shell thickness, convex and concave end designs, neck, foot and neck rings, limitations on tensile strength, and required design drawings.
- Manufacturing and workmanship: wall thickness tolerances, surface imperfection criteria, straightness, out-of-roundness and diameter controls.
- Inspection & nondestructive testing: ultrasonic examination procedures and acceptance criteria (Annex B), evaluation of manufacturing imperfections (Annex A).
- Type approval & batch testing: prototype testing, pressure cycling, bend/flattening tests (prototype), batch sampling, tensile, impact and hydraulic burst tests, proof pressure, volumetric expansion, hardness, leak and capacity checks.
- Thread and mechanical checks: new thread test requirements and informative shear strength/torque guidance (Annex G).
- Certification & marking: type approval certificates, batch/acceptance certificates and mandatory marking information for traceability.
Applications and who uses it
ISO 9809-1:2019 is used by:
- Cylinder manufacturers for design, process control and production acceptance.
- Design and engineering teams specifying safe cylinder geometry and materials.
- Testing and inspection laboratories performing batch and proof tests (hydraulic, tensile, impact, ultrasonic).
- Certification bodies and regulatory authorities issuing type approvals and conformity assessments.
- Gas suppliers, transporters and end-users who require cylinders compliant with international safety and transport regulations (including reference to UN Model Regulations).
Related standards
- Other parts of the ISO 9809 series (other materials and strength classes).
- UN Model Regulations on the transport of dangerous goods (standard is written to be referenceable).
