This document establishes general principles for the sampling of geosynthetics delivered to construction sites, and for the preparation of test specimens from the samples. The sampling principles are applicable to geosynthetics supplied in rolls or expandable panels. NOTE ISO 186 can be used for products supplied in sheet form. The specimen-preparation principles are applicable to all geosynthetics.

ISO 9862:2023 - Geosynthetics: Sampling and preparation of test specimens - defines general principles for taking samples of geosynthetics delivered to construction sites and for preparing laboratory test specimens from those samples. The standard applies to products supplied in rolls, expandable panels, and other forms; specimen-preparation principles apply to all geosynthetics. It replaces the 2005 edition and incorporates products not supplied in rolls.

- Do not use the first two turns of rolled products or the two outermost strips of expandable panels for sampling.
- Cut across the full width (perpendicular to machine direction for rolls) or parallel to the fully expanded direction for panels to obtain required sample length.
- For geosynthetic clay liners (GCL), follow guidance (ASTM D6072) - exclude the first and last 1.0 m of a roll and avoid the outermost layer material.
- Specimen preparation
- Distribute specimens evenly over the full width and length of the sample; maintain at least 100 mm from edges.
- Avoid specimens containing dirt, creases, holes, or other accidental defects (except for claim tests).
- For directional tests, avoid preparing multiple specimens in the same longitudinal/transverse orientation where possible; mark and preserve machine direction orientation on specimens.
- If cutting causes loose fragments or fraying, retain fragments with the specimen and report this.
- Storage and handling
- Maintain the physical condition of samples (e.g., moisture for clay barriers) during storage and transport.
- Store specimens in a dry, dark, dust-free place at ambient temperature; follow manufacturer recommendations where applicable.
