Overview
ISO 9902-7:2001 - Textile machinery - Noise test code - Part 7: Dyeing and finishing machinery specifies how to measure, declare and verify noise emissions from dyeing and finishing machines. Intended to be used together with ISO 9902-1 (Common requirements), this part covers mounting, operating and measuring conditions for engineering (grade 2) and survey (grade 3) noise test methods. It applies to machines for preparation, dyeing, printing, fixing, wetting and drying, finishing and making-up/presentation, but is not applicable to hydro (centrifugal) extraction machines.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Measurement objectives: Determination of sound power level and emission sound pressure level for dyeing and finishing machinery.
- Sound power measurement methods:
- Emission sound pressure methods: Use ISO 11201, ISO 11204 or ISO 11202 (11202 only where 11201/11204 are impracticable).
- Work station and measurement positions: The standard provides multiple predefined options (designated d) to n)) for selecting measurement positions around machines - including two, four, eight or single-position layouts - and specifies a measurement height of 1.60 m above floor or platform. Measurement distance may be reduced to 0.50 m in constrained spaces (must be reported).
- Test object definition: Clause references and Tables 1–6 define machine families, equipment included/excluded, and operating parameters to be recorded.
- Installation, mounting and operating conditions: Requirements align with ISO 9902-1 and must be recorded and reported for traceability.
- Uncertainty, reporting and verification: Clauses address measurement uncertainties, required information to record/report and procedures for declaration and verification of noise emission values.
Applications and who uses it
- Machine manufacturers - to declare noise emission values for dyeing and finishing equipment and demonstrate compliance.
- Test laboratories and acoustical engineers - to perform repeatable, standardized noise tests (engineering and survey methods).
- Plant engineers and safety officers - for procurement decisions, workplace noise assessments and hearing protection planning.
- Regulatory bodies and certification agencies - to verify declared noise values and ensure conformity with acoustic labeling or safety requirements.
