Concerns with the manipulation, processing, and interchange of all types of digital images. Defines a generic, unifying imaging architecture. Also defines those specializations or delineations of the generic imaging architecture that are required to support IPI-PIKS and IPI-IIF.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 12087-1:1995 - part of the Image Processing and Interchange (IPI) family - defines a common architecture for imaging intended to unify how digital images are represented, processed and interchanged. Part 1 provides the generic, abstract imaging model and rules that subsequent Parts (notably IPI‑PIKS and IPI‑IIF) and APIs must follow. Its goal is to improve portability of imaging applications by standardizing core image data types, operator behavior and interchange concepts.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Generic imaging architecture: an abstract model describing images, operators, data flows and presentation distinctions (digital image vs presentable image).
- Operator processing model: standardized rules for how image processing Operators manipulate image data and chain operations.
- Data types and image representations:
- Basic and compound data types (elementary types, compound structures).
- Derived image data types and attributes covering image channels, colour representations and annotations.
- Image-related non-image data (metadata, annotations, object attributes).
- IPI‑PIKS and IPI‑IIF delineations:
- IPI‑PIKS (Programmer’s Imaging Kernel System) specializations for processing and runtime API behavior.
- IPI‑IIF (Image Interchange Facility) specializations for interchange formats and profiles.
- Conformance framework: definitions for conformance of functionality, accuracy/precision, allowable extensions and conformance profiles (application and standardized profiles).
- Annexes: normative material covering structured image types, structure codes, colour representation and language-independent data types; informative bibliography.
Practical applications and target users
Who uses ISO/IEC 12087-1:
- Software developers and API designers building imaging libraries and SDKs.
- System integrators and vendors of image processing tools (enhancement, manipulation, analysis).
- Organizations implementing standardized image interchange between applications or archives.
- Standards architects and researchers in computer graphics and image processing.
Typical use cases:
- Designing a portable image-processing API compatible with IPI-PIKS.
- Implementing an interchange format or pipeline that conforms to IPI‑IIF profiles.
- Ensuring consistent handling of colour, metadata and operator semantics across tools.
- Creating conformance profiles for enterprise imaging workflows.
Related standards
- ISO/IEC 12087 (other Parts): Part 2 (PIKS API) and Part 3 (IIF interchange facility).
- Complementary multimedia/image standards such as JPEG (ISO/IEC 10918) and MPEG (ISO/IEC 11172) - ISO/IEC 12087 focuses on architectural and API-level consistency for a wide range of image-processing applications.
