ISO/IEC 14476-3:2008 defines a protocol for duplex multicast transport over the Internet where IP multicast is supported. A control tree mechanism for scalability and an error control mechanism for reliable multicast data delivery are specified. Protocol details such as packet format, parameter values and procedures are specified. This protocol can be used for applications that require one-to-many as well as many-to-one data delivery services.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14476-3:2008 (ECTP-3) specifies the Enhanced Communications Transport Protocol for duplex multicast transport over IP networks that support IP multicast. The standard defines a scalable, reliable multicast transport for scenarios with a single multicast sender (TC-Owner / TO) and multiple receivers (TS-users), plus controlled return (unicast) channels from selected users. ECTP-3 covers protocol elements such as packet formats, parameter values, timers, and detailed procedures for connection lifecycle and reliability control.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Duplex multicast model: Supports two channels - a multicast forward channel (TO → group) and unicast backward channels (selected TS-users → TO).
- Control tree for scalability: A hierarchical control tree (TO, Local Owners, Leaf Entities) used to scale control and error recovery across large groups.
- Token-based return control: TS-users must obtain a token from TO to become Sending TS-users (SU) and send unicast feedback, enforcing coordinated upstream access.
- Reliability and error control: Mechanisms for reliable multicast delivery including retransmission (RD), acknowledgments (ACK), heartbeats (HB/HBACK) and other reliability procedures.
- Connection management: Procedures for connection creation (CR/CC), late join (JR/JC), pause/resume, leave (LR), and termination (CT).
- Protocol artefacts specified: Base header, extension elements, packet types and formats, timers and parameters (Annex A), state transitions (Annex B) and APIs (Annex C).
- Transport assumptions: Operates over IPv4/IPv6 multicast-capable networks (using IGMP and multicast routing) and can be provisioned over UDP.
- Congruency with ECTP-1: Multicast forward transport aligns with the simplex specification (ISO/IEC 14476-1).
Applications and who uses it
ECTP-3 is designed for one-to-many and some-to-many Internet multicast applications that require controlled, reliable downstream delivery plus occasional upstream feedback:
- Remote education and large-scale web lectures (lecturer → students; selective student Q&A)
- Internet broadcasting with moderated feedback channels
- Panel conferencing or moderated collaboration where a few users send inputs to a convener for redistribution
- CDN and live-event distribution where scalable error recovery is needed Primary users include network architects, multicast application developers, streaming and broadcast platform engineers, telecom vendors, and standards implementers.
