ISO/IEC 14496-1:2010 specifies system level functionalities for the communication of interactive audio-visual scenes, i.e. the coded representation of information related to the management of data streams (synchronization, identification, description and association of stream content).

Overview
ISO/IEC 14496-1:2010 (MPEG‑4 Systems) specifies the system‑level framework for coding and communicating interactive audio‑visual scenes. It defines how encoded elementary streams (audio, video, text, fonts, scene description, interaction) are identified, synchronized, multiplexed and delivered so that a receiver (terminal or player) can reconstruct, compose and present interactive audio‑visual content. The standard focuses on metadata, timing and buffer models, synchronization, object descriptors and the interfaces to delivery and protection systems.
