ISO/IEC 14496-21:2006 describes a lightweight programmatic environment for advanced interactive multi-media applications. Designed for limited resources devices such as mobile phones, Graphics Framework eXtenstions (GFX) offer a framework that marries a subset of the MPEG standard Java application environment (MPEG-J) with a Java API for accessing 3D renderers, and with other standard Java APIs from a selected profile. The framework enables developers to create applications that combine MPEG audio and video streams, with 3D graphics rendering and user interaction. Applications can use advanced special effects in the graphics presentation such as mapping video as a texture. GFX applications, also called MPEGlets, follow the well-known design of MIDlets on J2ME platforms and reuse familiar media APIs from these platforms such as JSR-135 Mobile Media API. On the rendering side, GFX provides a pluggable renderer architecture that allows use of renderers such as Java bindings to OpenGL ES (JSR-239) or Mobile 3D Graphics (JSR-184). By allowing choice of low-level rendering APIs, developers are free to design optimized rendering algorithms for the needs of their applications and use dedicated application-specific formats for their assets, as do all highly interactive applications. Reusing existing mobile APIs, most Java applications currently used on mobile devices may be easily ported to a system using GFX. A GFX implementation is an ultra-thin layer of several class and interface definitions over standard Java and MPEG-J APIs. When added to any existing Java graphics API, the overhead is minimal.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14496-21:2006 - MPEG-J Graphics Framework eXtensions (GFX) defines a lightweight programmatic environment for advanced interactive multimedia on resource-constrained devices. GFX combines a subset of the MPEG-J Java application environment with a Java API for accessing 3D renderers and selected standard Java APIs, enabling applications that merge MPEG audio and video streams, 3D graphics rendering and user interaction. GFX implementations are an ultra-thin layer of class and interface definitions layered over standard Java and MPEG-J APIs, minimizing overhead for mobile and embedded platforms.
Key Topics
- Programmatic environment: a compact runtime profile derived from MPEG-J targeted at limited-resource devices (e.g., mobile phones).
- Pluggable renderer architecture: abstraction that allows different low-level renderers (for example, Java bindings to OpenGL ES (JSR-239) or Mobile 3D Graphics (JSR-184)) to be used interchangeably.
- Java API integration: reuses mobile Java media APIs such as JSR-135 (Mobile Media API) and follows MIDlet-like application structure (GFX applications are often called MPEGlets).
- 3D graphics + video mixing: support for advanced visual effects such as mapping live or pre-recorded video as textures onto 3D geometry.
- Minimal overhead: designed as a thin extension so existing Java mobile applications can be ported with low effort.
- Asset and rendering flexibility: allows developers to use optimized rendering algorithms and application-specific asset formats for highly interactive scenarios.
Applications
- Mobile and embedded multimedia applications that combine streaming audio/video with interactive 3D graphics (games, enriched broadcast, augmented media).
- Device OEMs and platform vendors implementing a compact multimedia runtime for feature phones or low-power handhelds.
- Middleware and SDK providers building pluggable renderers that leverage OpenGL ES or other mobile 3D APIs.
- Content creators and service providers producing interactive “MPEGlets” that reuse existing J2ME/MIDP workflows and media APIs.
- Developers needing to port or optimize rich-media Java applications to constrained environments with minimal platform overhead.
Related standards
