This part of ISO/IEC 14496 specifies the Delivery Layer of ISO/IEC 14496, which allows applications to transparently access and view multimedia streams whether the source of the streams is located on an interactive remote end-system, the streams are available on broadcast media or they are on storage media. In this part of ISO/IEC 14496, the following aspects are covered: DMIF communication architecture DMIF-Application Interface (DAI) definition URL semantic to locate and make available the multimedia streams DMIF Default Signalling Protocol (DDSP) for remote interactive scenarios, and its related variations using existing native network signaling protocols Information flows for player access to streams on remote interactive end-systems, from broadcast media or from storage media
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 14496-6:2000 - Delivery Multimedia Integration Framework (DMIF) defines the Delivery Layer of the ISO/IEC 14496 (MPEG‑4) suite. It specifies how multimedia applications transparently access and control audio‑visual streams regardless of whether content is on a remote interactive end‑system, broadcast media, or local storage. The standard covers DMIF architecture, the DMIF‑Application Interface (DAI), the DMIF‑Network Interface (DNI), URL semantics for locating streams, and the DMIF Default Signalling Protocol (DDSP) for remote interactive scenarios.
Key Topics
- DMIF communication architecture - overall delivery-layer design supporting multiple network types and delivery modes (remote interactive, broadcast, storage).
- DMIF‑Application Interface (DAI) - primitives and semantics for application-level operations (examples from the standard: DA_ServiceAttach, DA_ChannelAdd, DA_Data and callbacks).
- DMIF‑Network Interface (DNI) - control plane primitives (e.g., DN_SessionSetup, DN_ChannelAdd) and mappings to network signaling.
- DDSP and URL semantics - default signalling and addressing to locate and access multimedia streams.
- Quality of Service (QoS) model and monitoring - QoS descriptors, qosMode, qosReport and monitoring events for delivery performance.
- Control plane mappings - syntax and mapping examples for IP (TCP/UDP, RSVP), ATM (Q.2931), ITU‑T H.245 and DSM‑CC resource descriptors.
- User Plane and computational model - how audio‑visual data flows through the delivery layer to players.
- Terminal capability matching - default signalling and compatibility descriptors for device interoperability.
- Information flows - detailed procedures for session initiation, channel add/delete, and service termination for remote, broadcast and storage scenarios.
Applications
ISO/IEC 14496-6 (DMIF) is used by:
- Multimedia application developers and player/renderer implementers to access streams uniformly across delivery types.
- Middleware and set‑top box vendors designing delivery services and resource management.
- Network and service architects integrating streaming servers, CDN edge nodes, and interactive media services.
- Standards implementers mapping application-level delivery operations to network signalling (IP/RSVP, ATM Q.2931, H.245).
- System integrators needing QoS monitoring and terminal capability negotiation in MPEG‑4 deployments.
Related Standards
- Other parts of ISO/IEC 14496 (MPEG‑4) - systems, visual/audio coding and profiles.
- DSM‑CC (Digital Storage Media Command and Control) - used in control plane mappings.
- Network signalling protocols referenced in mappings: RSVP, TCP/UDP, ATM Q.2931, ITU‑T H.245.
