Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 15780:1998 specifies the physical, mechanical and magnetic characteristics of an 8 mm wide magnetic tape cartridge using helical-scan recording - the Advanced Intelligent Tape No. 1 (AIT-1) format. The standard enables physical and data interchange of AIT-1 cartridges and defines the recorded format, signal quality, recording methods and conformance rules so that cartridges recorded on one drive can be read reliably by another.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard covers detailed requirements across mechanical, magnetic and logical layers, including:
- Physical and mechanical cartridge features: case dimensions, holding areas, windows, datum areas, recognition holes, cartridge lid, reel access and tape path zones.
- Unrecorded tape properties: tape materials, length, width, thickness, tensile strength, layer-to-layer adhesion, winding and light transmittance.
- Magnetic characteristics and recording parameters: physical recording density, Typical Field and Reference Field definitions, signal amplitude, overwrite behavior, resolution, SNR, missing pulse criteria and calibration using Master/Secondary reference tapes.
- Track geometry and helical-scan layout: track configuration, track pitch, track width, azimuth angles, track edge straightness and positioning accuracy.
- Logical format and interchange layout: Entities, Frames, Basic Groups, Group Information Table, Block Access Table, System/Data Areas, partitioning, initialization, Early Warning Point (EWP), End of Data (EOD) and housekeeping frames.
- Conformance and interoperability: requirements for generating drives and receiving drives (including Read-After-Write behavior, ECC3 handling, processing/compression algorithms and Memory In Cartridge-MIC-data).
- Normative references and annexes: measurement methods (light transmittance, SNR, bit shift), ECC calculation, read-after-write recommendations and example Basic Group content.
Practical applications and users
ISO/IEC 15780 (AIT-1) is relevant to organizations involved in magnetic tape media and tape drive ecosystems:
- Tape cartridge manufacturers - to design and produce AIT-1 compliant cartridges and MIC data.
- Tape drive and recorder vendors - to implement compatible helical-scan recording, ECC handling, track geometry and conformance tests.
- Data centers, backup/archival professionals and media libraries - to ensure interchangeability and long-term readability of archived data on AIT-1 cartridges.
- Calibration and test labs - to validate signal amplitude, SNR and mechanical tolerances using Master/Secondary reference tapes.
- Standards bodies and integrators - for harmonizing interchange codes and compression algorithm registration (see ISO/IEC 11576 for registered lossless compression).
