This document focuses on the abstract interface between an application and the data processor and includes the specification and definition of application commands and responses. It allows data and commands to be specified in a standardised way, independent of the ISO/IEC 18000 series air interfaces. This document: — provides guidelines on presenting data as objects; — defines the structure of Object Identifiers, based on ISO/IEC 9834-1; — specifies the commands that are supported for transferring data between an application and the radio frequency identification (RFID) tag; — specifies the responses that are supported for transferring data between the tag and the application; — does not specify any required transfer syntax with ISO/IEC 15962, but provides the non-normative information in Annex A for backward compatibility with the 2004 version of this document (ISO/IEC 15961:2004[1]). [1] Withdrawn standard. Replaced by ISO/IEC 15961-1, ISO/IEC 15961-2, ISO/IEC 15961-3 and ISO/IEC 15961-4.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 15961-1:2021 - "Information technology - Data protocol for radio frequency identification (RFID) for item management - Part 1: Application interface" defines the abstract application interface between an application and the RFID data processor. The standard standardizes how data and commands are presented and exchanged with RFID tags for item management, independently of the ISO/IEC 18000 series air interfaces. It covers presentation of data as objects, the structure of Object Identifiers (based on ISO/IEC 9834-1), supported commands and responses, and conformance rules. It does not mandate a specific transfer syntax with ISO/IEC 15962, but includes non‑normative guidance (Annex A) for backward compatibility with earlier versions.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Abstract application interface: Defines the logical boundary and protocol model between applications and the tag data processor.
- Presentation of data as objects: Guidelines for modeling application data as objects and arguments.
- Object Identifier structure: Specifies Object Identifiers based on ISO/IEC 9834-1 and options for presenting them (including URN form).
- Commands and responses: Standardizes application commands and tag responses used to transfer data to/from RFID tags.
- Conformance and protocol model: Rules for application conformance and data-processor conformance, and the protocol processing options (e.g., straight-through vs. transfer-encoded processing).
- Presentation conventions and data types: Byte notation, bit ordering, byte conversion and other low-level representation guidelines.
- Encoding system-related information: Parameters such as Singulation‑Id, AFI, DSFID, Access‑Method, and Data‑Format - used to locate and access data on tags.
- Object and argument handling: Definitions for Object, Compact-Parameter, Object‑Lock and numerous command arguments (passwords, memory-bank indicators, record types, etc.).
- Backward compatibility: Non-normative Annex A for compatibility with the withdrawn 2004 standard.
Practical Applications and Users
ISO/IEC 15961-1:2021 is intended for organizations and professionals involved in RFID item management:
- RFID solution architects and system integrators designing interoperable item-tracking systems
- Software developers implementing RFID application interfaces or middleware
- Tag and reader manufacturers implementing data processors and conformance points
- Supply chain, inventory and asset management teams deploying standardized RFID data exchange
- Test labs and compliance bodies validating interoperability across implementations
Benefits include improved interoperability across vendors, consistent data modeling for item management, and independence from underlying air-interface technologies.
