ISO/IEC 17839-1:2014 establishes functional architecture of a Biometric System-on-Card definition of type S1 (fully ISO/IEC 7810 compliant) and type S2 implementation of a Biometric System-on-Card sensor types in a Biometric System-on-Card minimum requirements to a Biometric System-on-Card with respect to discriminative power (i.e. biometric accuracy criteria) interfaces power supply options The following aspects are out of scope of ISO/IEC 17839-1:2014: off-card biometric comparison, storage-on-card work-load sharing implementations detailed specification and configuration of individual components ISO/IEC 17839-1:2014 provides a functional architectural description of a Biometric System-on-Card and describes how the interfaces are mapped using existing commands and data structures from other International Standards.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 17839-1:2014 (Biometric System-on-Card)
ISO/IEC 17839-1:2014 defines the core functional requirements for a Biometric System-on-Card (BSoC) - a card-size device that integrates biometric acquisition, processing, storage, comparison and decision-making on the card itself. The standard describes two BSoC types: Type S1 (fully ISO/IEC 7810-compliant flexible ID-1 card) and Type S2 (a thicker, contactless-only variant). It provides a functional architecture and maps interfaces using existing international smart-card standards while specifying minimum biometric accuracy and power/interface options.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Functional architecture: captures the end-to-end on-card flow - capture (sensor), processing (feature extraction), comparison (matching against on-card reference), decision (thresholds, security policy) and authorization (updating card security state).
- Card types:
- Type S1: conforms to ISO/IEC 7810 dimensions and ISO/IEC 7816-1 mechanical tests; supports contact (ISO/IEC 7816-3), USB (ISO/IEC 7816-12) or contactless (ISO/IEC 14443) interfaces.
- Type S2: contactless-only (ISO/IEC 14443), intentionally deviates from some flexibility/thickness limits of ISO/IEC 7810; exact physical specs defined in Part 2 of ISO/IEC 17839.
- Sensor modalities: area fingerprint and swipe fingerprint sensors are specified; other modalities (voice, signature) may be used with appropriate sensors. Swipe sensors require on-card or reader feedback (LED, buzzer, display); area sensors operate intuitively.
- Biometric performance: minimum requirements for discriminative power (biometric accuracy criteria) are defined to ensure reliable verification on-card.
- Power supply options: contact-based power (per ISO/IEC 7816), contactless power (ISO/IEC 14443 or ISO/IEC 15693), and internal power (battery or capacitor). The standard addresses on-approach activation, indication of working-distance/power constraints, and battery-life/user-notification requirements.
- Out of scope: off-card comparison, storage-on-card architectures, workload sharing, and detailed component specifications.
Applications and who uses the standard
- Card manufacturers and component suppliers designing secure biometric payment, ID, e-passport or access-control cards.
- Systems integrators and solution architects creating biometric authentication workflows that require on-card matching and strong privacy (no biometric data export).
- Government identity programs and credential issuers evaluating secure, portable biometric authentication options.
- Smart-card reader and terminal designers planning contactless power and interface compatibility.
