This document specifies requirements for the symbology known as “QR code”. It specifies the QR code symbology characteristics, data character encoding methods, symbol formats, dimensional characteristics, error correction rules, reference decoding algorithm, production quality requirements and user-selectable application parameters.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 18004:2024 - "Information technology - Automatic identification and data capture techniques - QR code bar code symbology specification" - is the international standard that defines the QR code symbology. The document specifies the QR code’s characteristics, data character encoding methods, symbol formats, dimensional and production quality requirements, error correction rules, and a reference decoding algorithm. It is the authoritative specification for implementing, printing, decoding and validating QR codes for interoperable automatic identification and data capture.
Key topics and requirements
The 2024 edition of ISO/IEC 18004 covers technical and normative requirements, including:
- Symbol description and structure: definitions of function patterns (finder, timing, alignment), encoding regions, quiet zone and symbol versions/sizes.
- Data encoding modes: Numeric, Alphanumeric, Byte, Kanji, Extended Channel Interpretation (ECI) and Structured Append support.
- Encode and decode procedures: stepwise encode overview (data analysis, encoding, error correction, mask selection, format/version information) and a reference decode algorithm for implementers.
- Error correction: rules for generating and applying Reed–Solomon style error correction codewords and error correction capacity.
- Data masking and evaluation: mask patterns and evaluation criteria to improve readability and reduce scanner errors.
- Format and version information: placement and interpretation of metadata required for decoding.
- Printing, marking and dimensional requirements: symbol dimensioning, human-readable interpretation guidance and marking guidelines.
- Symbol quality and conformance: quality parameters (scan grade, fixed pattern damage, grid non-uniformity, print growth), process control measurements and conformity testing.
- Autodiscrimination and transmitted data: requirements for symbol detection and the representation of transmitted payloads.
Applications
ISO/IEC 18004:2024 is essential wherever QR codes are used for automatic identification and data capture:
- Retail and point-of-sale (product tags, coupons)
- Logistics and supply chain tracking
- Manufacturing and inventory control
- Healthcare labeling (samples, medical devices)
- Ticketing, mobile payments and authentication
- Mobile apps, web-to-physical linking, marketing and traceability
By following the standard, organizations ensure interoperability, reliable scanning across devices, consistent printing quality, and predictable error recovery.
Who uses this standard
- Barcode/QR code encoder and decoder software developers
- Printer and label manufacturers
- System integrators and solution architects
- Quality assurance and regulatory compliance teams
- Procurement and standards officers specifying barcode requirements
Related standards
ISO/IEC 18004:2024 complements other automatic identification and data capture standards and industry guidelines for barcode quality, printing, and scanner performance. For full implementation and legal use, obtain the official ISO/IEC 18004:2024 publication from ISO.
