ISO/IEC 18047-2:2012 defines test methods for determining the conformance of radio frequency identification (RFID) devices (tags and interrogators) for item management with the specifications given in ISO/IEC 18000-2, but does not apply to the testing of conformity with regulatory or similar requirements. The test methods require only that the mandatory functions, and any optional functions which are implemented, be verified. This may, in appropriate circumstances, be supplemented by further, application-specific functionality criteria that are not available in the general case. The interrogator and tag conformance parameters in ISO/IEC 18047-2:2012 are the following: mode-specific conformance parameters including nominal values and tolerances; parameters that apply directly affecting system functionality and inter-operability. The following are not included in ISO/IEC 18047-2:2012: parameters that are already included in regulatory test requirements; high-level data encoding conformance test parameters (these are specified in ISO/IEC 15962). Unless otherwise specified, the tests in ISO/IEC 18047-2:2012 are to be applied exclusively to RFID tags and interrogators defined in ISO/IEC 18000-2.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 18047-2:2012 defines standardized conformance test methods for RFID air‑interface communications below 135 kHz. It specifies the measurements and procedures needed to verify that RFID tags and interrogators conform to the parameters given in ISO/IEC 18000-2 for item‑management applications. The standard focuses on functional and interoperability parameters (mode‑specific nominal values and tolerances) and is not intended for regulatory compliance testing or high‑level data‑encoding conformance.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and targets
- Applies exclusively to RFID tags and interrogators defined in ISO/IEC 18000-2 (below 135 kHz).
- Tags shall support either Type A (FDX - full duplex) or Type B (HDX - half duplex); interrogators shall support both FDX and HDX.
- Test environment and default conditions
- Ambient: 23 °C ± 3 °C, non‑condensing relative humidity 40–60%.
- Pre‑conditioning: tags conditioned to the test environment for 24 h when required.
- Default tolerance for test equipment dimensions and adjustments: ±5%.
- Measurement and equipment controls
- Requirements for noise floor (at least 20 dB below DUT signal within the test band) and low spurious inductance in test components.
- Total measurement uncertainty must be stated in test reports (GUM guidance referenced).
- Conformance parameters and procedures
- Minimum activating magnetic field strength (to determine tag activation threshold).
- Level of tag response (modulation characteristic vs. field strength for FDX; equivalent for HDX).
- Tag waiting times, orientation, modulation index and waveform verification.
- Procedures and apparatus for interrogator tests, including tag emulation and response detection.
- Test artifacts and annexes
- Annex A (normative): detailed tag emulation circuit designs (reference air‑cored antenna, FDX/HDX emulators).
- Annex B (informative): program for spectrum evaluation.
Practical applications
- Ensures interoperability of low‑frequency (LF) RFID systems used in item management (e.g., inventory, asset identification).
- Provides repeatable test methods for product development, production verification, conformance labs, and procurement validation.
- Supports manufacturers and integrators in verifying mandatory and implemented optional functions prior to deployment.
Who should use this standard
- RFID tag and interrogator manufacturers
- Independent conformity test laboratories and QA teams
- System integrators and procurement/specification engineers in item‑management projects
- Standards and compliance engineers verifying product interoperability
