ISO/IEC 18477-3:2023, "Information technology - Scalable compression and coding of continuous‑tone still images - Part 3: Box file format", specifies a box-based container format (commonly called JPEG XT) designed primarily for continuous‑tone photographic content. The standard defines how extensible data structures called boxes are embedded into legacy JPEG codestreams (via APP marker segments) to carry extra image data and metadata - enabling higher bit depths, high‑dynamic‑range (HDR) images, alpha channels and decoding guidance while remaining backwards compatible with Rec. ITU‑T T.81 | ISO/IEC 10918‑1 legacy JPEG decoders.
