ISO/IEC 19794-3:2006, the finger pattern spectral data interchange format, specifies requirements for the representation of local or global spectral data derived from a fingerprint image. The format is designed to provide flexibility in the choice of spectral representation in that spectral components may be based on quantized co-sinusoidal triplets, Discrete Fourier Transformations or Gabor filters. The format also allows for a variable number of spectral components to be retained, which enables data representations in a form that is more compact than storage of the entire fingerprint image. ISO/IEC 19794-3:2006 provides example data records for each of the spectral representations.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 19794-3:2006 specifies a biometric data interchange format for finger pattern spectral data. The standard defines requirements for representing local or global spectral components extracted from a fingerprint image so that spectral-based fingerprint information can be exchanged without sending the full image. It supports compact, interoperable fingerprint templates suitable for constrained storage (smart cards, portable devices) and for spectral-based fingerprint matching algorithms.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Spectral representations supported: the format allows spectral components derived from
- Quantized co-sinusoidal triplets,
- Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT), and
- Gabor filters. Multi-scale (wavelet) decompositions are explicitly not accommodated.
- Flexible component retention: a variable number of spectral components may be retained per cell to enable compact templates smaller than full fingerprint images.
- Cell-based processing: the standard describes partitioning the fingerprint image into uniform cells (overlapping or non-overlapping) and extracting spectral components from each cell.
- Record structure and metadata: Clause 8 defines a detailed record header and single-finger record fields including format identifier, version, record length, image resolution (x/y), number of cells (x/y), cell size and spacing, spectral component selection method, frequencies, orientations, and bit-depths for angle, wavelength, phase, magnitude and quality scores.
- Quality and conformance: Clause 7 includes requirements for spectral data determination and quality scoring; Clause 2 defines conformance criteria for systems and algorithms.
- Examples and annexes: Informative annexes provide sample records for each spectral method and size comparisons.
- Patent notice: the document notes a claimed patent related to the quantized co-sinusoidal triplets method (Bioscrypt) and indicates licensing considerations.
Applications and Who Uses It
- Biometric vendors and algorithm developers who implement spectral-based fingerprint recognition can use ISO/IEC 19794-3:2006 to produce interoperable templates.
- System integrators and governments deploying large-scale fingerprint systems benefit from compact interchange formats for database exchange and remote matching.
- Smart card and embedded device manufacturers use the compact templates for storage-limited environments.
- Forensic and access-control solution providers that need standardized spectral representations for matching or sharing fingerprint data.
