The services defined in ISO/IEC 22534:2005 are used to establish and maintain a relationship between an application and a server for the purpose of exchanging application messages. For the purpose of ISO/IEC 22534:2005, this relationship is called an application session. Application protocols, such as ECMA-323, require that an application session is established before application messages are exchanged. ECMA-269 specifies several mechanisms for establishing an application context. One possible mechanism is ACSE (ISO/IEC 8649) - but since ASCE uses ASN.1 encoding for its services, it is not desirable for use with XML based protocols such as ECMA-323. ISO/IEC 22534:2005 provides an XML-based alternative for establishing application sessions.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 22534:2005 defines XML-based Application Session Services for establishing and maintaining an application-level relationship (an application session) between an application and a server to exchange application messages. Designed as an alternative to ASN.1/ACSE for XML protocols, this standard enables session management that is independent of underlying transports (TCP, HTTP, etc.) and is suitable for XML protocols such as CSTA-XML (ECMA-323).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Core services specified (Clause 4):
- Start Application Session – request/response exchange that returns a globally unique sessionID, negotiates protocol version(s), and communicates session duration.
- Stop Application Session – explicit termination initiated by the application.
- Reset Application Session Timer – refreshes the session timer to prevent expiration.
- Application Session Terminated – server-initiated notification for abnormal termination (e.g., timer expiry).
- Message formats and schemas (Clause 5): XML Schema definitions govern request and response instances; implementations must send/receive XML instance documents conforming to these schemas.
- Conformance rules:
- Application and server conformance profiles define required service support and mandatory XML elements.
- Positive and negative responses are defined; negative error codes include standardized errors such as invalidApplicationInfo, requestedProtocolVersionNotSupported, serverResourcesBusy, and maxNumberSessions.
- Session semantics:
- The server returns actualProtocolVersion and actualSessionDuration in the positive response.
- Session context must be maintained by the server until stopped or terminated.
- Interoperability considerations: Provides an XML-friendly alternative to ACSE (ISO/IEC 8649), avoiding ASN.1 encoding constraints for XML-based application protocols.
Practical applications and users
- Who benefits:
- Protocol designers and implementers of XML-based telecommunication protocols (e.g., CSTA-XML).
- Server and application developers implementing session management over HTTP/TCP.
- Systems integrators and vendors aiming for interoperable session control in contact centers, telephony control systems, and other real-time messaging applications.
- Compliance and QA teams validating conformance to standardized session services.
- Typical uses:
- Establishing authenticated, version-negotiated application sessions for message exchange.
- Managing session lifecycles (start/stop/timeout) in distributed telecommunication systems.
- Replacing ASN.1/ACSE session mechanisms where XML is the preferred encoding.
Related standards
- ECMA-323 (CSTA-XML) - an application protocol that may rely on these services.
- ECMA-269 - describes mechanisms for establishing application context; ISO/IEC 22534 offers an XML-based mechanism in that ecosystem.
- ISO/IEC 8649 (ACSE) - ASN.1/ACSE alternative referenced for contrast.
ISO/IEC 22534:2005 is essential reading for teams implementing XML-centric session management in telecom and real-time application messaging, ensuring clear rules for negotiation, lifecycle, and interoperability.
