ISO/IEC 23006-4:2013 specifies a set of Elementary Services and protocols enabling distributed applications to exchange information related to content items and parts thereof, including all the necessary Operations on MPEG-related Entities: Content, Contract, Device, Event, License, Service and User. These operations are defined to be the following: Authenticate, Authorize, Check With, Create, Deliver, Describe, Identify, Install, Interact With, Negotiate, Package, Post, Present, Process, Request, Revoke, Search, Store, Transact, Uninstall and Verify. Elementary Services can be combined in well defined sequences to build Aggregated Services, both of them being called in general Multimedia Services. ISO/IEC 23006 (all parts) will be referred to as MPEG-M for short in the text. The Multimedia Services are provided by and consumed by Multimedia Devices in a MSPT ecosystem, an example of which is the Advanced IPTV Terminal.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 23006-4:2013 (Multimedia service platform technologies - Elementary services)
ISO/IEC 23006-4:2013 is the Part 4 specification of the ISO/IEC 23006 suite (also known as MPEG‑M or MSPT). It defines a standard set of Elementary Services and protocols that enable distributed multimedia applications to exchange structured information about content and related entities. The standard is targeted at service‑oriented multimedia ecosystems (for example, Advanced IPTV Terminals) and describes the operations and message models needed for interoperable multimedia service platforms.
Key topics and technical requirements
The standard specifies:
- A catalog of Elementary Services and how they can be combined into Aggregated Services (general term: Multimedia Services).
- Operations on MPEG-related entities (Content, Contract, Device, Event, License, Service, User). Defined operations include:
- Authenticate, Authorize, Check With, Create, Deliver, Describe, Identify, Install, Interact With, Negotiate, Package, Post, Present, Process, Request, Revoke, Search, Store, Transact, Uninstall, Verify
- Namespace, schema and message conventions (base data types, common messages, DIDL restrictions, service schema wrapper).
- Session control, status polling and protocol binding details for reliable service invocation.
- Process service types (e.g., speech recognition/synthesis, translation, content adaptation, transcoding) and BPMN 2.0 XML representations for service flows.
- Normative references and interoperability requirements with related MPEG and MPEG‑21 standards (metadata, digital item declaration, IPMP, contract and rights languages).
Technical emphasis: consistent XML schemas, namespace conventions, service instance declaration, and well‑defined sequences to compose elementary services into higher‑level offerings.
Practical applications and intended users
ISO/IEC 23006-4:2013 is useful for:
- Developers of multimedia service platforms and middleware (MSPT/MPEG‑M) that require standardized service interfaces.
- Manufacturers of Advanced IPTV Terminals (AITs) and set‑top boxes seeking interoperable service invocation and content handling.
- Service integrators and platform architects building service‑oriented media value chains, third‑party application providers, and content distribution systems.
- Standardization engineers implementing DRM, metadata exchange, content adaptation, search, and billing/transaction services.
Benefits: enables interoperability across devices and services, simplifies creation of aggregated multimedia services, and supports innovative business models and third‑party APIs for IPTV and broadband multimedia.
Related standards
ISO/IEC 23006-4 references and is designed to interoperate with other MPEG/MPEG‑21 and multimedia standards, including:
