This document primarily specifies formats for the Media Presentation Description and Segments for dynamic adaptive streaming delivery of MPEG media over HTTP. It is applicable to streaming services over the Internet.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 23009-1:2022 (DASH MPD & Segment Formats)
ISO/IEC 23009-1:2022 defines the core formats and semantics for Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH) focused on the Media Presentation Description (MPD) and segment formats used to deliver MPEG media over HTTP. This fifth-edition standard specifies the MPD hierarchical data model (Periods, Adaptation Sets, Representations), update and assembly rules, and the structure and types of segments (initialization, media, index, bitstream switching and missing content). It covers segment formats for both ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF) and MPEG-2 Transport Stream (MPEG-2 TS) and is applicable to streaming services over the Internet.
Key Topics and Requirements
- Media Presentation Description (MPD): XML schema, semantics and hierarchical model including Period, Adaptation Set, Representation and Sub-Representation concepts.
- Segment types and formats: Initialization, media, index, bitstream switching, and missing content segments with special handling for ISOBMFF and MPEG-2 TS.
- Client model & protocols: DASH client behavior, data model, and interactions with HTTP-based delivery.
- Segment addressing & base URL processing: Reference resolution, alternative base URLs and MPD assembly.
- Switching and random access: Requirements for switching points, resynchronization and non-overlapping segments/subsegments to support seamless adaptive bitrate (ABR) switching.
- MPD updates and chaining: Mechanisms for dynamic MPD updates, MPD reset, chaining and fallback strategies for live and dynamic content.
- Descriptors, events and metrics: Generic and specific descriptors, event signaling (in-MPD and inband), and DASH metrics descriptor for reporting.
- Producer timing & time handling: Producer Reference Time, leap second semantics and content popularity metadata.
- Interoperability: Rules to ensure conformance across packagers, players, CDNs and content creation workflows.
Applications and Who Uses It
ISO/IEC 23009-1:2022 is essential for:
- OTT service providers and broadcasters implementing HTTP-based streaming (live and on-demand).
- Player developers and middleware vendors implementing DASH clients and adaptive bitrate logic.
- Content packagers and encoders producing properly formatted ISOBMFF or MPEG-2 TS segments.
- CDN and server engineers optimizing segment delivery, caching and base-URL resolution.
- QA and interoperability teams validating DASH compliance across ecosystems.
Benefits include improved interoperability, consistent ABR switching, robust live-streaming support and clearer client-server semantics.
Related Standards
- Related MPEG and ISO media standards (e.g., ISOBMFF, MPEG transport systems) are referenced for segment format specifics.
- Other parts of the broader DASH suite (additional parts address conformance, server/client APIs and advanced features) complement Part 1 when building complete streaming solutions.
