This document describes the architecture of systems for the internet of media things.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 23093-1:2022 - "Information technology - Internet of media things - Part 1: Architecture" defines the architecture for the Internet of Media Things (IoMT). The standard describes how media-focused devices and systems (cameras, microphones, displays, haptics, media wearables, analysers, storages and actuators) discover one another, exchange media-related data, and expose capabilities through APIs and compressed data representations. This second edition (2022) revises use-case descriptions and underlying technologies and replaces the 2020 edition.
Key technical topics and requirements
- IoMT architecture: conceptual framework for media-centric IoT systems (MThings, MSystems).
- APIs and interfaces: standardized APIs to discover media things, connect, and efficiently exchange media and metadata across networks.
- Data formats: specified input/output formats for media sensors, analysers, storages and actuators to enable interoperability.
- Media tokens: virtual tokens for controlled access to functionalities, resources and valuable data on media things.
- Component terminology: formal definitions (audio, camera, display, gesture, haptics, media wearable, etc.) to ensure common semantics.
- Design constraints: the standard specifies interfaces and data formats but does not dictate internal sensing or analysis algorithms.
- Use-case driven scope: detailed use cases (smart spaces, guided navigation, smart cities, health, blockchain for authentication/monetization) illustrate practical implementations.
- Mapping to IoT: informative annex maps IoMT components to existing IoT reference architectures.
Applications and who would use this standard
ISO/IEC 23093-1 is aimed at professionals building media-aware connected systems:
- System architects & solution designers creating end-to-end IoMT deployments (surveillance, digital signage, immersive A/V).
- Device manufacturers (network cameras, smart glasses, speakers, haptic devices) implementing interoperable media interfaces.
- Software developers & API designers building media analysers, edge processing and cloud services that consume/produce standardized media data.
- Integrators & product managers deploying smart spaces (human tracking, multi-camera synchronization, smart factories, museums, connected vehicles).
- Healthcare and city planners leveraging IoMT for collaborative health, environmental sensing and smart-city A/V systems.
- Researchers & standards bodies extending IoMT APIs, security models and tokenization for monetization and authentication (including blockchain use cases).
Representative use cases in the standard include human tracking with networked cameras, intelligent firefighting using IP cameras, automatic video clip generation, blind-person navigation assistants, smart museum augmentation, and blockchain-based content authentication and rewards.

- Part of the ISO/IEC 23093 series - other parts (APIs, compressed representations) are referenced on the ISO/IEC websites.
- The document contains terminology cross-references (e.g., ISO/IEC 24760-1 appears in examples).
- Note: the standard may involve patent claims; consult ISO/IEC patent database and national bodies for licensing details and to obtain the full text from ISO.
