ISO/IEC 24775-1:2014(E) defines an interface for the secure, extensible, and interoperable management of a distributed and heterogeneous storage system. This interface uses an object-oriented, XML-based, messaging-based protocol designed to support the specific requirements of managing devices and subsystems in this storage environment. Using this protocol, this part of ISO/IEC 24775 describes the information available to a WBEM Client from an Information Technology - Storage Management compliant CIM WBEM Server. This International Standard, together with ISO/IEC 24775-2 to ISO/IEC 24775-8, replaces ISO/IEC 24775, second edition, published in 2011, and constitutes a technical revision. The significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition are listed in the INTRODUCTION. This publication is to be read in conjunction with the IEC 24775 series.
Abstract
Overview - ISO/IEC 24775-1:2014 (Storage management - Part 1: Overview)
ISO/IEC 24775-1:2014 provides a high‑level overview of the storage management framework defined by the ISO/IEC 24775 series. It describes an object‑oriented, XML‑based, messaging protocol (CIM/WBEM style) used to enable secure, extensible, and interoperable management of distributed, heterogeneous storage systems. Part 1 is informational: it explains concepts, architecture, maturity levels and how a WBEM Client obtains storage information from a compliant CIM WBEM Server. Together with Parts 2–8, it replaces the earlier single‑book edition and reorganizes storage management into focused profiles for SAN, NAS, fabrics, hosts and media libraries.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Interface model: Object‑oriented information model exposed via a CIM/WBEM server using XML messaging to support management clients.
- Interoperability focus: Standardized object classes and messaging to enable cross‑vendor management of SAN, NAS, fabrics and host elements.
- Multi‑level functionality model: Device, connectivity, block, file/record and application levels (used to map capabilities and management operations).
- Security and extensibility: Designed to support secure management and to be extensible through profiles defined in Parts 2–8.
- Maturity model: Typographical markers and lifecycle stages (Experimental, Implemented, Stable, Finalized, Deprecated) to indicate implementation readiness of standard elements.
- Functionality matrix & FCAPS mapping: Describes fault, configuration, accounting, performance and security (FCAPS) alignment across the storage model.
- Scope of profiles: Part 1 references the broader series where detailed profiles cover block devices, filesystems, fabric, host elements, media libraries, common architecture and profiles.
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO/IEC 24775-1 (and the wider 24775 series) is intended for:
- Storage vendors who implement CIM/WBEM servers to expose device and array management functions.
- Systems integrators and OEMs building multi‑vendor SAN/NAS solutions that require standardized management interfaces.
- Software developers of storage management tools, orchestration platforms and monitoring systems that consume WBEM/CIM data.
- Storage architects and administrators needing vendor‑neutral methods for provisioning, monitoring, fault management and automation.
- Cloud and data center operators who require consistent management across heterogeneous storage infrastructures.
Typical uses include vendor‑neutral monitoring, automated provisioning, configuration management, replication and thin provisioning lifecycle integration (implemented in Parts 3–8).
