ISO/IEC 24775-5:2014(E) defines management profiles for Autonomous (top level) profiles for programs and devices whose central function is providing support and access to file data. In addition, it provides documentation of component profiles (or subprofiles) that deal with file systems and management interface functions that may be used by other autonomous profiles not included in this part of the standard. This International Standard, together with ISO/IEC 24775-1 to ISO/IEC 24775-4 and ISO/IEC24775-6 to ISO/IEC 24775-8, replaces ISO/IEC 24775, second edition, published in 2011, and constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following changes: - Improved organisation; - Maturity indication; - expanded scope.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 24775-5:2014 - Information technology - Storage management - Part 5: Filesystems - defines management profiles for systems and devices whose primary role is providing access to file data. It documents both autonomous profiles (top-level services) and component subprofiles that describe file system behaviors and management interface functions. This part is a technical revision within the ISO/IEC 24775 series and introduces improved organization, a maturity model, and an expanded scope for file-system management.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Management profiles and subprofiles for file services, including File Export Profile, File Export Manipulation Subprofile, File Server Manipulation Subprofile, and File Storage Profile.
- Operations and methods for lifecycle management of file shares and file servers (create/modify/delete file shares and servers, manage IP interfaces, export/release shares).
- CIM/WBEM mapping: extensive use of CIM elements (e.g., FileShare, ExportedFileShareSetting, FileServerSettings) and SNIA-specific classes to standardize representations for management tools.
- Health and fault management: operational status models and fault considerations for file shares, file servers, and export services.
- Configuration and capabilities models: element setting data, capabilities descriptions, and predefined setting patterns to support automation and interoperability.
- Client considerations and recipes: usage scenarios and step-by-step client recipes for creation, modification, and removal of exports.
- Maturity model and documentation status: sections identifying experimental, implemented, stable, finalized, and deprecated material to guide implementers.
Practical applications
- Standardizes how NAS devices, file servers, and storage appliances expose file-system management to enterprise management platforms.
- Enables vendors to provide interoperable management interfaces (CIM/SNIA) for file exports, IP/NFS/CIFS interface configuration, and service lifecycle operations.
- Supports cloud storage and virtualization platforms that need consistent APIs for managing shared filesystem exports, quotas, and access controls.
- Helps system integrators and automation engineers implement reliable provisioning, monitoring, and remediation workflows for file services.
Who should use this standard
- Storage vendors and appliance manufacturers implementing management interfaces
- Enterprise storage architects, system administrators, and SREs designing file-service automation
- Software developers building storage-management, orchestration, and monitoring tools (CIM/WBEM, SNIA)
- Standards committees and implementers aligning product behavior to international storage-management models
Related standards
- ISO/IEC 24775 series: Parts 1–4 and 6–8 (this part complements the other parts that together replace the 2011 edition of ISO/IEC 24775).
- SNIA and CIM/WBEM specifications referenced within the standard for class and schema mappings.
