ISO/IEC 29109-10:2010 specifies elements of conformance testing methodology, test assertions, and test procedures as applicable to ISO/IEC 19794-10. ISO/IEC 29109-10:2010 establishes test assertions of the structure of the hand geometry silhouette data format as specified in ISO/IEC 19794-10:2007 (Type A Level 1 as defined in ISO/IEC 29109-1:2009), test assertions of internal consistency by checking the types of values that may be contained within each field (Type A Level 2 as defined in ISO/IEC 29109-1:2009), informative guidance for testing the consistency of selected encoded data fields with the input biometric data (Type B Level 3 as defined in ISO/IEC 29109-1:2009). ISO/IEC 29109-10:2010 does not establish test of conformance of CBEFF structures required by ISO/IEC 19794-10:2007, test of consistency with input biometric data record (Level 3 as defined in ISO/IEC 29109-1:2009), test of other characteristics of biometric products or other types of testing of biometric products (e.g. acceptance, performance, robustness, security), test of conformance of systems that do not produce ISO/IEC 19794-10:2007 records.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29109-10:2010 defines a conformance testing methodology for the hand geometry silhouette data interchange format specified in ISO/IEC 19794-10:2007. It establishes test assertions, test procedures, and implementation guidance to verify that binary hand geometry silhouette records (BDBs) conform to the structural and internal-consistency requirements of the base standard. The document focuses on Type A Level 1 (structure) and Level 2 (internal value consistency) tests, and provides informative guidance for selected Level 3 checks (Type B) that compare encoded fields with input biometric data.
Key Topics
- Conformance testing methodology: Adapts the generalized framework of ISO/IEC 29109-1 for hand geometry silhouette records.
- Test assertions:
- Structure checks (Type A Level 1) - verify correct record layout and header fields (e.g., record identifier “HND”, version encoding).
- Internal consistency (Type A Level 2) - validate permitted value types and ranges for fields such as record length, HGVR (Hand Geometry View Record) structure, and reserved fields.
- Informative Level 3 guidance (Type B) - guidance for testing consistency between selected encoded fields and the input biometric data (not normative Level 3 testing).
- Data format specifics referenced: Freeman Chain Code (FCC) for silhouette encoding, BDB embedding requirements, HGVR metadata and silhouette blocks, resolution and orientation constraints.
- Conformance artifacts: Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) templates and requirements for Biometric Data Interchange Record (BDIR) handling.
- Scope limits: Does not prescribe testing of CBEFF structures, full Level 3 consistency tests, system performance, robustness, security, or systems that do not produce ISO/IEC 19794-10 records.
Applications
Who uses ISO/IEC 29109-10:2010 and why:
- Testing organizations and certification bodies - develop Conformance Test Suites (CTS) and run standardized checks on hand geometry silhouette records.
- Biometric product developers and vendors - validate BDB output and produce an Implementation Conformance Statement (ICS) to claim conformance to specific ISO/IEC 19794-10 requirements.
- System integrators and procurement teams - ensure interoperability by requiring products that conform to the ISO/IEC 19794-10 conformance tests. Practical uses include interoperability testing, quality assurance for biometric record generation, and compliance verification for systems that exchange hand geometry silhouette data.
