The series of ISO/IEC 29341 publications defines an architecture for pervasive peer-to-peer network connectivity of intelligent appliances, wireless devices and PCs. It is designed to bring easy to use, flexible, standards-based connectivity to ad-hoc or unmanaged networks whether in the home, in a small business, public spaces or attached to the Internet.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 29341-8-4:2008 - Information technology - UPnP Device Architecture - Part 8-4: Internet Gateway Device Control Protocol - Wide Area Network Connection Device specifies the UPnP template for a WANConnectionDevice. It defines a virtual device container used under an InternetGatewayDevice to model a single logical or physical WAN link (for example a DSL VC, cable, Ethernet or POTS ISP instance). This part of the ISO/IEC 29341 UPnP Device Architecture (edition 1.0, 2008) establishes how link and connection services are organized, named and related for WAN interfaces.
Key topics and requirements
- Device identity and type
- Mandatory device type:
urn:schemas-upnp-org:device:WANConnectionDevice:1. - WANConnectionDevice instances are specified under the root InternetGatewayDevice/WANDevice hierarchy.
- Mandatory device type:
- Container for link and connection services
- Models a single link on a WAN interface and contains the relevant WAN*LinkConfig and WAN**Connection services.
- Handles multiple instances (e.g., DSL Virtual Circuits each mapped to a separate WANConnectionDevice).
- Required and optional services
- Required (when applicable): WANPPPConnection (for PPP-based connections) and WANIPConnection (for IP-based connections). Multiple instances are allowed; service IDs follow a numbered convention (e.g., WANIPConn1, WANIPConn2).
- Optional: WANPOTSLinkConfig (POTS), WANDSLLinkConfig (DSL), WANCableLinkConfig (Cable), WANEthernetLinkConfig (Ethernet).
- Service relationships and dependencies
- The Layer3Forwarding service may reference a WANConnectionDevice instance via the DefaultConnectionService state variable (uses the UDN of the instance).
- WANCommonInterfaceConfig (in WANDevice) models attributes common across all links.
- Scope and compliance
- Intended to be implemented by UPnP-compliant Internet gateway devices and modem interfaces to ensure interoperable control and configuration over unmanaged/ad-hoc networks.
Practical applications and users
- Who uses it: router and modem manufacturers, firmware and device software engineers, UPnP stack developers, network equipment integrators, test labs, ISPs and systems integrators who need to expose WAN link/control functions over UPnP.
- Use cases: automatic remote configuration of NAT/port mapping, representing DSL virtual circuits and PPP/IP connections to control points, enabling home and small-business gateway management, and supporting interoperability between consumer gateways and management software.
