Overview
ISO/IEC 30134-3:2016 defines the Renewable Energy Factor (REF) as a key performance indicator (KPI) for data centres. The standard specifies a clear methodology to calculate, measure, present and interpret the REF, which quantifies the portion of a data centre’s annual energy consumption that is supplied by renewable energy (RE) resources owned and legally controlled by the facility.

- Total data centre energy includes electricity, natural gas and district utilities measured at the facility boundary.
- Reporting requirements: When publishing REF, include data centre boundaries, REF value, measurement period end date (ISO 8601 format), the basis for classifying RE, and the issuing entity/entities for any RE certificates used.
