ISO/IEC 7816-1:2011 specifies the physical characteristics of integrated circuit cards with contacts. It applies to identification cards of the ID-1 card type, which can include embossing and/or a magnetic stripe and/or tactile identifier mark as specified in ISO/IEC 7811. Test methods are specified in ISO/IEC 10373-1. ISO/IEC 7816-1:2011 applies to cards which have a physical interface with electrical contacts. It does not, however, define the nature, number and position of the integrated circuits in the cards.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 7816-1:2011 is an international standard that defines the physical characteristics of integrated circuit cards (IC cards) with contacts. Specifically, it applies to ID-1 type identification cards, the commonly used credit card size, which may also incorporate embossing, magnetic stripes, and tactile identifier marks as specified by related standards like ISO/IEC 7811. This standard establishes essential guidelines ensuring the reliability, durability, and interoperability of smart cards featuring contact interfaces, making it a foundational document for manufacturers, issuers, and users of contact IC cards worldwide.
Key Topics
-
Card Dimensions and Contact Interface ISO/IEC 7816-1 prescribes the physical requirements of IC cards with contacts without defining the exact nature, position, or number of integrated circuits embedded within the card. It ensures the card thickness, contact surface, and overall form factor are consistent with global expectations for ID-1 cards.
-
Contact Surface Profile Contact pads on the card must be within ±0.10 mm relative to the adjacent card surface, ensuring reliable physical and electrical connection with card readers, while reducing the risk of damage or malfunction.
-
Mechanical Strength Cards must withstand typical handling and usage stresses. Contact areas should resist damage under prescribed test pressures such as a 1.5 N force applied via a 1 mm diameter steel ball.
-
Electrical Contact Resistance The contacts' electrical resistance must remain low enough (no more than 0.5 Ω) during operation, measured under specific current conditions to secure effective communication between card and reader.
-
Electromagnetic Compatibility The standard mandates that any magnetic stripe included on the card should not interfere with the integrated circuit operation nor should IC operations disrupt the magnetic stripe's functionality, ensuring coexistence of multiple technologies on one card.
-
Test Methods Reference to ISO/IEC 10373-1 defines the test procedures to verify compliance with physical properties outlined in this standard.
Applications
ISO/IEC 7816-1:2011 plays a critical role in various practical applications, including:
-
Banking and Financial Services Ensuring that credit and debit cards with contact chips meet stringent physical criteria for durability and performance.
-
Identity Verification Used in government-issued ID cards and driver’s licenses that incorporate integrated circuits with contact pads.
-
Access Control and Security Facilitating secure access cards that require reliable physical and electrical interfaces to readers.
-
Telecommunications Supporting SIM cards and related devices that rely on consistent contact physical standards.
-
Multi-Technology Cards Enabling cards that combine magnetic stripes and contact ICs, requiring strict electromagnetic compatibility.
Related Standards
ISO/IEC 7816-1:2011 is part of the broader ISO/IEC 7816 series governing integrated circuit cards with contacts. Relevant associated standards include:
- ISO/IEC 7816-2: Specifies card dimensions and precise location of contacts.
- ISO/IEC 7816-3: Defines electrical interface and transmission protocols for asynchronous cards.
- ISO/IEC 7811 Series: Addresses embossing, magnetic stripe recording, and tactile identifier features which can co-exist with IC card contacts.
- ISO/IEC 10373-1: Outlines test methods for validating physical characteristics and overall card quality.
- ISO/IEC 7816-4: Covers organization, security, and interchange commands, extending applicability beyond physical aspects.
