ISO/IEC 9541 specifies the architecture of font resources, as well as the formats for font interchange among information processing systems. It also specifies the architecture and formats that can be used to construct font references in general electronic document interchange. ISO/IEC 9541-4:2009 specifies the correspondences between ISO/IEC 9541 font resource and ISO/IEC 14496-22 Open Font Format file (OFF), to define ISO/IEC 9541 font resource from a given OFF file. The classification (required or optional), syntax, and possible values of the properties are defined in ISO/IEC 9541‑1 and ISO/IEC 9541‑2. The glyph shape representation and its interpretation are defined in ISO/IEC 9541‑3.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 9541-4:2009 - "Information technology - Font information interchange - Part 4: Harmonization to Open Font Format" defines how to map Open Font Format (OFF / ISO/IEC 14496-22) files to the ISO/IEC 9541 font resource architecture. It fills the gap between OFF font files (based on TrueType/CFF structures) and the abstract font resource model in ISO/IEC 9541, specifying correspondences so an OFF file can be represented as an ISO/IEC 9541 font resource.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and purpose: Specifies correspondences between OFF tables and ISO/IEC 9541 properties to enable reliable font interchange and resource construction.
- OFF table harmonization: Defines mapping rules for major OFF tables including head, name, hhea, hmtx, vhea, vmtx, maxp, kern, post, CFF, OS/2, PCLT, VORG, VDMX.
- Glyph names and layout: Describes harmonization of glyph names from OFF files and references layout tag registration (ISO/IEC 10036) for text layout interoperability.
- Numeric metrics alignment: Annex A addresses harmonization of numerical properties (horizontal and vertical metrics) between OFF and OFFS/ISO models.
- Property classification: Notes that property classification (required/optional), syntax and allowed values are defined in ISO/IEC 9541‑1 and ISO/IEC 9541‑2; glyph shape representation is covered in ISO/IEC 9541‑3.
- Normative references: Relies on OFF specification (ISO/IEC 14496‑22), font compression/streaming (ISO/IEC 14496‑18), and other ISO/IEC 9541 parts.
Practical applications
- Font conversion and toolchains: Implementers converting OFF fonts to ISO/IEC 9541-compliant resources (or vice versa) use these mappings to preserve metadata, metrics and glyph information.
- Document processing and typesetting: Page description languages, desktop publishing systems and document interchange workflows rely on consistent font resource definitions for accurate rendering across platforms.
- Digital archiving and interoperability: Archives and repositories that store font metadata in standardized resource formats use the harmonization rules to ensure long-term, platform-neutral access.
- Font engineering and QA: Font engineers, foundries and QA teams use the standard to validate that OFF-derived resources correctly represent font metrics, naming and style flags.
Who should use this standard
- Font developers and foundries
- Software engineers building font converters, renderers, or layout engines
- Digital publishing and typesetting vendors
