This document specifies mechanisms to choose between the keyboard groups specified in the ISO/IEC 9995 series, national keyboards standards, or other keyboard definitions. These mechanisms primarily become useful when the stipulated marking on the key top can be dynamically displayed on the key top.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/IEC 9995-12:2020 - Information technology - Keyboard layouts for text and office systems - Part 12: Keyboard group selection - specifies standardized mechanisms to choose between keyboard groups used for multilingual and multiscript input. It is intended for environments where key-top markings can be dynamically displayed (physical keyboards with dynamic labels or on‑screen keyboards). The standard defines a compact, keyboard-driven method to switch collections of characters (groups) without relying solely on graphical menus.
Key topics and requirements
- Superselect sequence: A defined sequence to begin group selection - typically the Level 3 select key (often labelled AltGr or Alt) combined with Tab. If no Level 3 key exists, an alternate key must be specified by the implementation.
- Terminating sequence: Selection is confirmed by the Return key.
- Selection tokens: After the superselect sequence, groups can be chosen using specified selection characters:
- Hyphen-minus (
-) + ISO/IEC 15897 registration number (LC_KEYBOARD) - Full stop (
.) + OS-provided keyboard name - Solidus (
/) + file name or URL referencing a keyboard spec (ISO/IEC 24757 format recommended) - Plus sign (
+) + digit to define a quick‑reference slot followed by one of the above identifiers - Single digit to recall a previously defined slot
- Backspace to revert to the previous keyboard
- Space to revert to the system default keyboard
