Overview
ISO/IEC 9995-4:2025 is the international standard that defines the numeric section (numeric keypad) of keyboards used for text and office systems. Part of the ISO/IEC 9995 series, this fourth edition specifies the physical division, key arrangement and exact allocation of functions for the numeric zone (ZN0) and the function zone (ZN1). It updates previous editions to reflect the state of the art while aligning with related ITU-T recommendations for telematic symbols.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Division into zones: The numeric section is split into two zones - numeric zone ZN0 (digits/decimal/telematic) and function zone ZN1 (Enter, arithmetic operators, Numeric Lock, optional keys).
- Two permitted numeric layouts:
- "1-2-3" layout - intended for telematic and telephony applications; includes telematic functions (initiator, terminator) at A51/A53 and digits arranged with 1 at the bottom row.
- "7-8-9" layout - intended for text/data processing and general office use; places 7‑8‑9 on the top row and supports alternate functions (cursor keys, Page Up/Down, Insert/Delete) when Numeric Lock is toggled off.
- Key allocations and locations: The standard defines exact key positions (e.g., A51, A52, A53, D51–D53, etc.) for digit and function keys and prescribes where Enter (A54, often extended to B54) and Numeric Lock (E51) should be located.
- Decimal separator and telematic functions: Decimal separator is a function key (use symbol per ISO/IEC 9995-7 or national convention); telematic symbols follow ITU‑T E.161.
- Behavior rules: Numeric Lock toggles between digit mode and alternative office functions; pressing numeric-zone keys with shift or other modifiers can access secondary functions; OS or applications may map digit keys for other behaviors.
Applications and users
- Practical uses include: data entry, general office computing, banking and ATM PIN entry, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, telematic services, telephony devices, home electronics, numerical control of machinery, and combined voice/data terminals.
- Primary users of the standard:
- Keyboard and device manufacturers designing numeric keypads
- POS/ATM/telephony hardware vendors
- Operating system and application developers mapping numeric-key behavior
- UX/ergonomics specialists and standards bodies ensuring interoperability
