ISO/TR 12350:2013 - "Road vehicles - Injury risk curves for the evaluation of occupant protection in side impact tests" provides standardized injury risk curves for assessing occupant protection in lateral (side) impact tests using the WorldSID 50th side-impact dummy. The Technical Report documents the methodology for building curves from post‑mortem human subject (PMHS) data, describes dummy data collection and scaling, and includes age-adjustment provisions. The curves support tests performed to ISO 10997 and tests used by regulatory bodies and consumer safety organizations.

Key technical topics and requirements

Scope and target dummy: Injury risk curves are supplied for the WorldSID 50th (mid‑size adult male). Addition of WorldSID 5th (adult female) is intended for future editions. The WorldSID curves are not appropriate for ES‑2 or ES‑2re dummies.

PMHS data selection: In‑depth review of PMHS datasets (including NHTSA database sources) with explicit inclusion/exclusion criteria to ensure reproducibility with dummies. Selected datasets are documented in annexes.

Body regions and AIS levels: Curves were constructed using PMHS injury coding (AIS 2005). Body regions and AIS levels included:

Head - AIS ≥ 3
Shoulder - AIS ≥ 2
Thorax (skeletal) - AIS ≥ 3 and AIS ≥ 4; Thorax (soft tissue) - AIS ≥ 2 and AIS ≥ 3
Abdomen - AIS ≥ 2 and AIS ≥ 3
Pelvis - AIS ≥ 2 and AIS ≥ 3

Dummy data and scaling: Dummy measurements reproducing PMHS test configurations are collected (Annex H). Where PMHS were not mid‑size males, dummy results are scaled per formulae in Annex I before pairing with PMHS injuries.

Age adjustment: Injury curves include age‑adjustment formulae (Table 5). Curves are presented for a 45‑year‑old male (commonly used average) and for the median PMHS age (67 years) to reflect confidence differences.

Statistical analysis and documentation: Methodology and statistical approaches are described; detailed test data and supporting material are provided across Annexes A–J.
