ISO 281:2007 introduced a life modification factor, aISO, based on a systems approach to life calculation, in addition to the life modification factor, a1.These factors are applied in the modified rating life equation, Lnm = a1aISOL10. The modification factor for reliability, a1, for a range of reliability values, is given in ISO 281:2007 as well as the method for evaluating the modification factor for systems approach, aISO. L10 is the basic rating life. ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 gives supplementary background information regarding the derivation of a1 and aISO.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TR 1281-2:2008 is a technical report that provides explanatory background for the modified bearing life calculation introduced in ISO 281:2007. It explains the derivation and practical meaning of the two life modification factors used in the modified rating life equation: Lnm = a1 · aISO · L10 where L10 is the basic rating life, a1 is the life modification factor for reliability, and aISO (also noted a) is the systems‑approach life modification factor that accounts for lubrication, contamination and other system influences on fatigue stresses.
This TR assembles experimental evidence, theoretical derivation and practical guidance used to prepare ISO 281:2007 so users can apply the systems approach to fatigue stresses consistently.
Key topics
- Modified rating life equation and the role of the two modification factors (a1 and aISO).
- Life modification factor for reliability (a1): derivation and use to compute lives for reliability levels other than the L10 (90 %) baseline.
- Systems‑approach factor (aISO): links system effects (lubrication, contamination, material fatigue limits, internal stresses) to additional contact stresses that influence fatigue life.
- Lubrication factor (η) and contamination factor (ηc / e): definitions, experimental basis and how cleanliness, filtration and oil viscosity affect bearing life.
- Cleanliness codes and measurement: background on ranges used (references to ISO 4406 and particle counting per ISO 11171).
- Additional influences on life: wear (abrasive, mild, adhesive), corrosive environments (including hydrogen effects), hoop stress, temperature, and contaminant particle hardness.
- Fatigue load limit and contact stress relationships, and parameters such as viscosity ratio (κ) and film thickness ratio (Λ).
Applications
ISO/TR 1281-2 is practical for engineers and specialists who need to move beyond basic L10 life estimates and account for system conditions when predicting bearing life or specifying components:
- Bearing designers and OEMs assessing expected life under specified lubrication/contamination regimes.
- Reliability, maintenance and asset managers using life predictions for maintenance planning and risk assessment.
- Tribologists and lubrication engineers specifying oils, filtration and cleanliness targets.
- Test engineers validating bearing life and manufacturers documenting life‑rating methods.
Practical uses include more accurate bearing selection, defining cleanliness/filtration requirements, setting lubricant viscosity targets, and refining reliability targets for critical equipment.
Who should use this standard
- Bearing designers, mechanical engineers, reliability engineers, maintenance planners, tribology specialists, and standards/quality groups in industries using rolling bearings (automotive, aerospace, industrial machinery, power generation).
