ISO/TS 13530:2009 provides comprehensive guidance on within‑laboratory and between‑laboratory quality control for ensuring the production of results with a known level of accuracy in the analysis of waters. ISO/TS 13530:2009 is applicable to the chemical and physicochemical analysis of all types of waters. It is not intended for application to the analysis of sludges and sediments (although many of its general principles are applicable to such analysis) and it does not address the biological or microbiological examination of water. Whilst sampling is an important aspect, this is only briefly considered.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TS 13530:2009 - Water quality: Guidance on analytical quality control for chemical and physicochemical water analysis provides practical, standards‑based guidance to ensure reliable, traceable analytical results for the chemical and physicochemical testing of all types of waters. It focuses on both within‑laboratory (intralaboratory) and between‑laboratory (interlaboratory) quality control to produce results with a known level of accuracy. The Technical Specification excludes biological/microbiological methods and is not intended for sludges and sediments (though many principles still apply). Sampling is acknowledged but only briefly covered.
Key topics and technical requirements
ISO/TS 13530 covers the essential elements of analytical quality control and performance assessment, including:
- Performance characteristics of analytical systems: scope of method, calibration strategies, and evaluation of system performance.
- Calibration and linear/non‑linear calibration functions (references to ISO 8466).
- Limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantification (LOQ) and procedures for verification.
- Interferences and matrix effects that can bias results and how to identify them.
- Accuracy, trueness and precision: definitions, assessment and reporting; links to ISO 5725 concepts.
- Measurement uncertainty: principles and estimation approaches (informative guidance included).
- Robustness and fitness for purpose: ensuring methods remain suitable for intended use.
- Choosing analytical systems: practical and operational considerations.
- Intralaboratory quality control: control of accuracy, trueness, precision; use and interpretation of control charts (including target control charts).
- Interlaboratory quality control: participation in proficiency testing and comparison schemes.
- Quality control for lengthy, infrequent or ad‑hoc procedures, with examples and annexes (LOD/LOQ verification, sources of analytical errors, uncertainty estimation).
The document aligns with accreditation and QA frameworks such as ISO/IEC 17025 and EURACHEM/CITAC guidance.
Practical applications and who uses it
ISO/TS 13530 is intended for laboratories and organizations involved in water testing that require structured quality control, including:
- Environmental and wastewater laboratories
- Drinking water testing labs
- Industrial water monitoring facilities
- Laboratory managers, quality managers and analytical chemists
- Accreditation bodies and proficiency testing providers
Use cases include designing intralaboratory QC programs, selecting control charts and acceptance criteria, verifying LOD/LOQ, assessing method suitability, and preparing for accreditation or interlaboratory comparisons.
