The purpose of ISO/TS 16843-2:2015 is to specify categorial structures within the subject field of acupuncture by defining a set of domain constraints for use within terminological resources. This Technical Specification describes a concept system detailing domain constraints of sanctioned characteristics, each composed of a semantic link and an applicable characterizing category. The potential benefits of ISO/TS 16843-2:2015 include: a) support for developers of new terminology systems concerning acupuncture needling; b) support for developers of new detailed content areas of existing terminology systems concerning acupuncture needling procedures to ensure accuracy, repeatability and comparability; c) facilitating the representation of acupuncture needling procedures using a standard core model in a manner suitable for computer processing; d) providing a conceptual framework for the generation of compositional concept representation of acupuncture needling; e) facilitating the mapping and improved semantic correspondence between different terminologies by proposing a core specification for acupuncture needling; f) providing a core model to describe the structure of acupuncture, and facilitate improved semantic correspondence with information models; g) providing a tool for acupuncture text mining, database construction, ancient documents processing and wide area of acupuncture information collection and processing; h) providing a new method for researchers to conduct relevant research, and ideas for the development of acupuncture disciplines. Target groups include: - stakeholders such as companies that offer systems that incorporate Electronic Categorial Structures, by helping building knowledge databases or automatic processing of medical literature, and - doctors, who can be better assisted with knowledge and documentation of needling procedures. This Technical Specification can also be used in clinical decision support and to help in data mining for researchers.
Abstract
Overview
ISO/TS 16843-2:2015 - Health informatics - Categorial structures for representation of acupuncture - Part 2: Needling - defines a standardised categorial framework for representing acupuncture needling in terminological resources. The Technical Specification specifies domain constraints, authorized semantic links, and characterizing categories that enable accurate, repeatable and computable descriptions of needling procedures for health informatics use.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Categorial structures and concepts: Defines what a concept, category and characteristic are for acupuncture needling and prescribes minimal domain constraints for terminologies.
- Authorized semantic links: Lists formal relations (e.g., Measures, Uses, Causes, Result_of, Evaluation_of, Co-occurs_with, Precedes) used to connect needling concepts and their attributes.
- Characterizing categories: Specifies categories relevant to needling, including insertion technique, insertion parameters, stimulation/manipulation techniques, withdrawing method, supplementation/draining, needle type & characteristics, retention time, response sought, acupuncture effects, abnormal situations, sham acupuncture and stimulation dose.
- Conformance principles: Terminology systems must conform to ISO 17115 (vocabulary for terminological systems) and incorporate the required categories and authorized relations.
- Computability and compositional modelling: Provides a core model and conceptual framework to represent needling procedures in a machine-processable, compositional way, supporting mapping between terminologies.
Practical applications
- Terminology developers: Use the specification to build or extend controlled vocabularies and ontologies for acupuncture needling to ensure semantic consistency and interoperability.
- Health IT and EHR vendors: Implement electronic categorial structures to capture structured needling data for clinical documentation and decision support.
- Researchers and data scientists: Enable reliable data mining, text mining, meta-analysis and database construction from clinical trial reports, ancient documents and literature about acupuncture.
- Clinicians: Improve documentation, reproducibility and comparability of needling procedures for clinical practice, training and audits.
- Interoperability & mapping: Facilitates semantic mapping across different terminologies and information models, improving data exchange and integration.
Who should use it
- Developers of terminology systems and health informatics tools
- EHR/clinical decision support designers
- Acupuncture researchers and clinical trial authors
- Companies building knowledge databases, text-mining or analytics platforms
