ISO/TS 16973:2016 specifies the classification of Respiratory Protective Devices based on their performance. The performance requirements are given in the relevant performance standards.

Modes of operation: distinguishes supplied breathable gas RPD (e.g., SCBA, airline apparatus) from filtration RPD (filters that remove particles, gases or vapours). Combined and multi‑functional RPD can have multiple classes depending on mode.
Protection classes (PC): based on laboratory Total Inward Leakage (TIL) per ISO 16900‑1. Specified PC levels include:
- PC1 – TIL max 20%
- PC2 – TIL max 5%
- PC3 – TIL max 1%
- PC4 – TIL max 0.1%
- PC5 – TIL max 0.01%
- PC6 – TIL max 0.001%
Work rate classes (W1–W4): classification of breathing resistance/work of breathing using ISO 16900‑12 and mapped to metabolic work classes in ISO/TS 16976‑1 (W1 light → W4 maximal).
Respiratory interface classes: defined by coverage area (mouth-only to whole-body) and fit type (tight-fitting vs loose-fitting). Classes are coded (a–e for area, plus L/T for loose/tight).
Supplied breathable gas capacity: self-contained RPD are designated by an “S” plus gas capacity (rounded to standard increments).
Filter classification: particle filter efficiency and work‑rate classes, gas filter type and capacity-detailed in relevant performance standards.
Special application classes: optional additional classification for uses such as firefighting, CBRN, marine, mining, abrasive blasting, welding and escape.

Manufacturers use ISO/TS 16973 to label and market RPD consistently across jurisdictions.
Test laboratories and conformity assessors apply the classification to interpret performance test results (TIL, filter penetration, work of breathing).
