Overview
EN ISO 10724-2:2000 (equivalent to ISO 10724-2:1998) specifies requirements for the injection moulding of small test plates from thermosetting powder moulding compounds (PMCs). It defines two ISO mould types - Type D1 and Type D2 - for producing two-cavity plates 60 mm × 60 mm with preferred thicknesses of 1.0 ± 0.1 mm (D1) and 2.0 ± 0.1 mm (D2). The standard is intended to ensure reproducible, comparable test specimens for mechanical, thermal, electrical and other laboratory tests.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Mould geometry: two-cavity ISO mould designs (D1, D2) and cavity dimensions (60 ± 2 mm length and width; depth per type).
- Gate and runner details: gate length recommended 4.0 ± 0.1 mm; gate height specified as (0.75 ± 0.05) × plate thickness. Runner and gate design tolerances are controlled to limit effects on cure, flow orientation and shrinkage.
- Pressure sensor: provision for a flush-mounted cavity pressure sensor (position typically 5 ± 2 mm from the gate) for moulding shrinkage measurements (ISO 2577) and process control.
- Machine requirements: recommended minimum locking force FM > 11 000 · pmax · 10−3 (example: 880 kN for pmax = 80 MPa).
- Processing guidance: conditioning and injection-moulding procedure reference ISO 10724‑1; injection velocity recommended so that injection time tI is comparable to that for the type A ISO mould.
- Accessories & options: inserts for studying weld-line effects, marking conventions for identifying cavity, flow orientation and part top/bottom (see annexes B and C).
- Reporting: specify reference to this part and key moulding parameters per ISO 10724‑1.
Practical applications & users
EN ISO 10724-2:2000 is used to produce standardized small plate test specimens for:
- Multiaxial impact testing (ISO 6603) and puncture tests
- Moulding shrinkage measurement (ISO 2577)
- Electrical property testing, water absorption, dynamic mechanical analysis
- Studying anisotropy, filler orientation and weld-line effects
Typical users include: materials test laboratories, polymer R&D teams, quality assurance departments, mould designers and manufacturers, and suppliers of thermosetting PMCs who need comparable, reproducible test specimens.
