ISO 13732-3:2005 provides methods for the assessment of the risk of cold injury and other adverse effects when a cold surface is touched by bare-hand/finger skin. It provides ergonomics data for establishing temperature limit values for cold solid surfaces. The values established can be used in the development of special standards, where surface temperature limit values are required. Its data are applicable to all fields where cold solid surfaces cause a risk of acute effects: pain, numbness and frostbite, and are not limited to the hands but can be applied in general to the healthy human skin of male and female adults.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 13732-3:2008 - Ergonomics of the thermal environment - Methods for the assessment of human responses to contact with surfaces - Part 3: Cold surfaces provides standardized methods to assess the risk of cold injury and other adverse acute effects (pain, numbness, frostbite) from contact between bare skin (hand/finger or general adult skin) and cold solid surfaces. Adopted by CEN from ISO 13732-3:2005, the standard delivers ergonomics data and guidance for establishing surface temperature limit values used in machinery, product design and occupational safety.
Key Topics
- Scope and purpose: Methods for assessing acute cold hazards from contact with cold solid surfaces and for deriving temperature limit values usable in special standards.
- Risk factors identified: surface material and thermal properties, surface and ambient temperature, duration of contact, skin characteristics, and type/nature of contact.
- Threshold data and empirical models: summarizes experimental threshold data (human and artificial finger tests) and uses empirical models (e.g., lower-quartile based) to estimate finger/hand cooling and safe contact times across populations.
- Risk assessment procedures: stepwise approach to identify hazards, evaluate exposure (temperature, contact time, material), and estimate injury risk.
- Guidance for limit values: principles for establishing conservative surface temperature/time limits to prevent acute effects.
- Protective measures: design options, material choices, and administrative controls to minimize cold contact risk.
- Supporting annexes: scientific background, extension of application, thermal properties of materials, worked examples of risk assessment, and recommended protective measures.
Applications and Users
This ergonomics standard is practical for:
- Design engineers and product manufacturers creating machinery, tools, appliances, medical devices or consumer products with potentially cold surfaces.
- Safety and occupational health professionals conducting cold injury risk assessments and specifying controls.
- Standards developers and regulators who need normative data to set surface temperature limits in type C standards or directives.
- Ergonomists and human factors specialists integrating thermal-contact risk into workplace design.
- PPE and materials specialists evaluating glove performance or surface coatings to reduce cold contact severity.
Typical uses include deriving safe surface temperature/time limits, designing guards or insulation, specifying materials with favorable thermal properties, and demonstrating conformity with EU machinery directives (e.g., 2006/42/EC) where applicable.
