ISO 14171:2016 specifies the requirements for the classification of electrode/flux combinations and weld metal in the as-welded condition and in the post-weld heat-treated condition for submerged arc welding of non-alloy and fine grain steels with minimum yield strength of up to 500 MPa or a minimum tensile strength of up to 570 MPa. One flux can be classified with different solid wire electrodes and tubular cored electrodes. The solid wire electrode is also classified separately based on chemical composition. It is a combined specification providing for classification utilizing a system based upon the yield strength and the average impact energy for weld metal of 47 J, or utilizing a system based upon the tensile strength and the average impact energy for weld metal of 27 J. a) Paragraphs and tables which carry the suffix letter "A" are applicable only to electrode/flux combinations and wire electrodes classified using the system based upon the yield strength and the average impact energy for weld metal of 47 J, in accordance with ISO 14171:2016. b) Clauses and tables which carry the suffix letter "B" are applicable only to electrode/flux combinations and wire electrodes classified using the system based upon the tensile strength and the average impact energy for weld metal of 27 J, in accordance with ISO 14171:2016. c) Clauses and tables which do not have either the suffix letter "A" or the suffix letter "B" are applicable to all electrode/flux combinations and wire electrodes classified in accordance with ISO 14171:2016. Fluxes for the single-run and two-run techniques are classified on the basis of the two-run technique.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 14171:2016 (CEN / ISO 14171:2016) defines the classification of welding consumables used for submerged arc welding (SAW) of non‑alloy and fine‑grain steels (up to 500 MPa yield or 570 MPa tensile). It covers solid wire electrodes, tubular cored electrodes, and electrode/flux combinations, specifying how weld metal is classified in the as‑welded and post‑weld heat‑treated conditions. The standard supports two parallel classification systems to meet different market needs: one based on yield strength + 47 J impact energy (suffix “A”) and one based on tensile strength + 27 J impact energy (suffix “B”).
Key topics and requirements
- Classification systems: dual approach allowing designation by yield/impact (47 J) or tensile/impact (27 J). Clauses/tables are marked with suffix A, B, or neither to show scope.
- Electrode/flux combinations: one flux may be classified with different solid wires or tubular wires; flux classification for single‑run and two‑run techniques is based on the two‑run technique.
- Solid wire classification: also classified separately by chemical composition of the deposit.
- Symbols and designations: standardized symbols for process, tensile and impact properties, flux type, chemical composition and hydrogen content.
- Mechanical testing: provisions for multi‑run and two‑run test techniques to determine tensile, yield and impact properties of all‑weld metal.
- Chemical analysis & hydrogen: requirements for deposit composition analysis and hydrogen content measurement (reference to ISO 3690).
- Rounding, retest and delivery conditions: procedures for reporting results, retesting and specifying technical delivery conditions.
Applications
EN ISO 14171:2016 is used by:
- Welding consumable manufacturers to classify and label solid wires, cored wires and fluxes.
- Welding engineers and QA/QC teams specifying consumables to meet mechanical and impact requirements for structural, pressure, pipeline, shipbuilding and heavy fabrication projects.
- Procurement and inspection personnel verifying that supplied consumables meet classified mechanical properties and deposit chemistry.
- Standards writers and certifiers who need harmonized designations across European and international markets.
Related standards
Normative references and related documents commonly used with EN ISO 14171:2016:
- ISO 14174 (flux classification)
- ISO 3690 (hydrogen determination)
- ISO 15792‑1 / ‑2 (test methods for all‑weld metal specimens, specimen preparation)
- ISO 544, ISO 14344 (delivery and procurement of filler materials)
EN ISO 14171:2016 helps ensure consistent, tested classification of SAW consumables so designers and fabricators can select appropriate filler materials to meet strength and toughness requirements.
