Overview
EN ISO 15605:2004 (ISO 15605:2000) - "Adhesives - Sampling" is a CEN-endorsed International Standard that specifies methods to obtain uniform, representative samples of adhesives and related products for examination and preparation prior to testing. It sets out principles for safe, reproducible sampling from manufacturing vessels and delivery containers, including multi-component systems (sampling each component separately). The standard explicitly excludes sampling from a running adhesive stream (see ISO 8213) and does not apply to animal glues.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and applicability
- Sampling methods for finished adhesives and related products (not animal glues).
- Applicable to systems requiring separate sampling of components (e.g., catalysts, hardeners).
- Terminology
- Definitions for batch, delivery, gross sample, laboratory sample, reference sample, storage sample, and test sample to ensure clarity in sampling workflows.
- Safety and handling
- Hazard controls for volatile or flammable solvents, explosion risk, inhalation and skin exposure.
- Precautions for static electricity, earthing of large containers, and working with light-, moisture- or oxygen-sensitive adhesives.
- Filling sample containers typically 80–90% full (except anaerobic adhesives - max 50%).
- Product types
- Classification of adhesive product types (A–F): single-phase fluids, emulsions, dispersions, viscous mastics, powders, and solids (films, tapes, sheets).
- Special handling for hygroscopic, moisture-reactive, light-sensitive and anaerobic adhesives.
- Sampling equipment and cleanliness
- Requirements for materials and design (non-reactive, easy to clean).
- Use of stirrers, weighted sampling cans, sampling tubes, scoops, and appropriate sample containers (metal, glass, polyethylene).
- Strict cleaning and labelling requirements; adherence to regulations for dangerous goods labelling.
- Sampling situations and methods
- Procedures for sampling from manufacturing vessels (stirring, multiple-level sampling) and during filling of delivery containers (regular sub-samples).
- Guidance on preparing representative gross samples and reducing them to laboratory/test samples.
- Documentation and storage
- Labelling, sealing, sampling reports, and storage of retained/reference samples for dispute resolution.
Applications and users
- Who uses it: quality control laboratories, adhesive manufacturers, procurement and QA teams, third‑party testing labs, regulatory auditors.
- Practical uses: ensuring representative test material for physical, chemical and performance testing; demonstrating batch compliance; dispute resolution by retained reference samples; safe handling protocols for hazardous adhesive chemistries.
