ISO 16000-5:2007 is intended as an aid to planning volatile organic compound (VOC) indoor pollution measurements. In the case of indoor air measurements, the careful planning of sampling and the entire measurement strategy are of particular significance since the result of the measurement may have far-reaching consequences, for example, with regard to the need for remedial action or the success of such an action. An inappropriate measurement strategy may contribute to the complete uncertainty of the measurement result in a larger extent than the measurement procedure itself.
Abstract
Overview
EN ISO 16000-5:2007 (ISO 16000-5:2007) - “Indoor air - Part 5: Sampling strategy for volatile organic compounds (VOCs)” is a CEN-endorsed ISO standard that provides guidance for planning measurements of volatile organic compounds in indoor environments. It focuses on designing a robust sampling strategy because poor planning can introduce greater uncertainty than the analytical method itself. The document is intended as an aid to practitioners who need representative, defensible VOC indoor-air data.
Key topics
- Definition and classification of VOCs - overview of volatility classes (VVOC, VOC, SVOC) and relevance to sampling media and analysis.
- Sources and occurrence - typical indoor VOC sources (building products, furniture, occupants, activities, ambient air) and implications for variability.
- Measurement techniques - considerations for short-term and long-term measurements and links to active and diffusive sampling methods.
- Sampling and measurement planning - systematic workflow covering:
- Measurement objectives and recording environmental conditions
- Timing of sampling (time of day, activities)
- Duration and frequency of sampling
- Selection of sampling locations within rooms or buildings
- Presentation of results and assessment of measurement uncertainty
- Quality assurance and documentation
- Informative annexes - examples of VOCs commonly found in indoor air and a protocol to record activities and boundary conditions during sampling.
Practical applications
- Developing a sampling campaign to assess indoor air quality (IAQ) in offices, schools, homes, or public buildings.
- Designing monitoring programs to verify remediation success after contamination or renovation.
- Informing decisions on ventilation improvements, product selection, or exposure mitigation.
- Standardizing sampling strategy for research studies, compliance checks, and forensic IAQ investigations.
Who should use this standard
- Environmental and indoor air quality consultants
- Industrial hygiene and occupational health professionals
- Building managers, facility operators, architects and HVAC engineers
- Accredited laboratories and field technicians performing VOC sampling
- Regulators and policy makers setting IAQ monitoring requirements
