Overview
EN ISO 16559:2022 - Solid biofuels: Vocabulary provides a harmonized set of terms and definitions used across the solid biofuels sector. Prepared by ISO/TC 238 in cooperation with CEN/TC 335, this second edition (2022) replaces the 2014 edition. The standard covers raw and processed materials originating from forestry and arboriculture, agriculture and horticulture, and aquaculture, and standardizes vocabulary for woody, herbaceous, fruit and aquatic biomass and biodegradable waste from those sectors.
Materials from end-of-life product recycling, liquid biofuels, natural gas and solid recovered fuels are outside the scope, although some related terms are included for information. The document supports consistent use of language across testing, classification, procurement and regulation.
Key Topics
- Scope and exclusions: clarifies which biomass types are included and explicitly excludes certain recycled materials and other fuel types (liquid biofuels, natural gas, SRF).
- Core definitions: origin/source, traded forms, and preparation forms of solid biofuels.
- Properties and testing terminology: moisture states (e.g., air-dried, as received/as determined), ash and ash melting behaviour (ash deformation, hemisphere and flow temperatures), and other analytical terms.
- Handling and physical characteristics: terms such as angle of repose/angle of drain, baled biofuel, bag weight and bulk density concepts.
- Sampling hierarchy and structure: Annex A (informative) provides a scheme of sample hierarchy to support consistent sampling and analysis.
- Cross-references: aligns terminology with related standards (for example ISO 17225 series) and test methods (e.g., ISO 21404 for ash properties).
Applications
EN ISO 16559:2022 is practical for stakeholders who need consistent, international terminology:
- Fuel producers and suppliers - standardize product descriptions, specifications and trading terms.
- Testing and certification laboratories - ensure clarity in sampling, reporting and interpretation of results.
- Equipment manufacturers and plant operators - use uniform terms for fuel handling, combustion characteristics and ash behaviour.
- Regulators and procurement teams - draft legislation, tender documents and contracts with unambiguous vocabulary.
- Researchers and educators - harmonize terminology across publications and curricula in biomass and bioenergy.
Adopting this vocabulary reduces misunderstandings in international trade, improves comparability of test data and supports clearer fuel classification and specification.
Related Standards
- ISO 17225 series - classification and specifications for solid biofuels (referenced for virgin material limits and Annex B).
- ISO 21404 - ash fusibility test methods and related terms.
- ISO technical committees referenced: ISO/TC 238 (Solid biofuels); exclusions reference ISO/TC 28/SC 7 (liquid biofuels), ISO/TC 193 (natural gas) and ISO/TC 300 (solid recovered fuels).
